Delmas looks forward to a physical match-up
Posted by Chrissie Wywrot on October 7, 2009 – 7:49 pmLouis Delmas has always tried to model himself after the top safeties in the NFL. This week, he could have the opportunity to watch one play up close.
Steelers’ Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu may make his return to action this week against the Lions after suffering a knee injury Week 1.
Delmas: “Having a chance to play against a guy like Polamalu is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I’m going to cherish. All through my years I’ve been compared to Ed Reed, Polamalu, and I’ve always watched them and try to pick out how they play – how they react to the ball. Just to be in his presence, actually going against him, is a great challenge for me and a great opportunity for me to prove to everybody else that I am one of the best.”
Obviously Delmas isn’t hoping to see Polamalu succeed against the Lions, but he does hope the way he plays and impacts the Steelers’ defense can be foreshadowing to the way he will ultimately impact the Detroit defense.
Delmas: “Honestly, I don’t think he has a defense. The Steelers defense might be one defense, but he doesn’t have a defense. He’s the one dude that I know that his motto is to run to the ball and when he gets there, he’s going to do something nasty with it.”
The Steelers Delmas will be lining up against on the playing field aren’t any easier to contend with. It all starts with the quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger.
Delmas: “Roethlisberger might be big and tall, but he can move for a big dude. He looks like he played fullback back in his day or tight end back in his day. But we’ve got to do a good job of containing him; get him on the ground and not give him second chances to throw the ball.”
Pittsburgh’s other offensive components will be challenging as well. Rashard Mendenhall had a breakout game last week against San Diego and the receiving corps has two top players in Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes.
Delmas: “(Ward is) basically a receiver with a linebacker mentality. He’ll knock DBs over, he’ll knock linebackers out. We’ve just got to try and match up as well as we can with their athletes against our athletes and just execute. At the end of the day it’s all about tackling.”

I live out of India and mostly picked the LIONS as my team since I was young an impressionable 4 years ago. Having been on the rollercoaster just the same as everyone I wouldnt change a damn thing in retrospect.
GO LIONS

Richard…I’d like to say I’m sorry to hear that you are leavin the LIONS for the Pats but I can’t. I have known so many “FAIR WEATHER” fans its crazy. I agree with Dino, if you can’t see that things are headed in the right direction, you either have your eyes closed or your head so far up Brady’s A– you can lick his intestines. Go ahead, jump off now. We don’t need FAKE and PHONY FANS!!!! PEACE & GOOD RIDDENCE

Well I am a LIONS Fan and I was a litlle ruff the other day.
However it was only because I know that this TEAM can win against the BEARS or anyone else for that matter!
And yes WE can win against the Steelers Too!
No one is saying that it will be easy BUT it can be done and this TEAM CAN DO IT!
I also hope that Stafford can play. However if he can’t and Dante get’s the start then I hope we win!
However I do still think that weather Dante plays in this game and wins that Stafford should still get right back onto the Field as soon as he can.
He is the Future and we should be getting ready for it NOW!
If Dante Plays this weak then he is my QB for this week!
BUT, NO matter which one is out there I expect this TEAM to win NOW! NO excuses!
There is not even one TEAM that Cannot be beat.
And that goes for the Steelers too!
Delmas I know your a rookie But,YOU can play just as tuff as polamalu!
It is in your head and thoughts. See yourself as that warrior! And that is what polamalu is a warrior!
I hope that we start this game much like we did last week. Except that i hope we can and we can get the RUNNING game going early CANT WE KEVIN!
I have been waiting for you to have a breakout game and get you started going all the way through the rest of the year and get that 1000 YARD YEAR!
And IN the second quarter come out ready to play instead of looking like you just woke up from a nap.
Some how you Men have to find a way to get all pumped up and ready to play RIGHT NOW!
Sometimes it seems like YOU guy’s come back out and play like the game is over and your just commig out to watch the rest of the game!
WELL, YOUR IN THE GAME SO GET INTO IT! NOW!
The game isn’t over after a Touchdown and it isn’t over after the half And it isn’t over when the other TEAM is in the LEAD it is over when the GAME ends and we have the MOST POINTS!
There shouldn’t be one minute in any game that you should be giving up, quiting, relaxing, resting or anything else until we have a 30 point lead and the wistle blows or the gun goes off or until YOUR coaches finally say that it is a done deal and your the winners!
I don’t have any advise except to Turn the passing GAME ON in the second half of the game.
And that doesn’t mean NEVER pass in the first half. It just means really turn it on in the second half.
AND BELIEVE YOU WON THE GAME BEFORE IT EVEN STARTS!
That does NOT MEAN HOWEVER THAT YOU DON”T HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME! IT means that you can see yourselfs doing everything correct and that everything you do is going to go right and that your going to play the whole game through until it is over and when it ends and your ahead that you knew it would be like that before it started because you were prepared for it to turn out that way!
LIONS!

Delmas – Forget what Richard posted; not only because he is wrong, but more importantly – he is not a Lion’s fan.
You played great; getting your first sack and a safety blitz and a hit on Coulter that had to throw it away on 3rd down forcing a punt.
Special teams let us down, that and not being able to run against Cover 2 defense.
Keep up your “Rookie of the Year” season; know that true Lion’s fans are always behind you.
By the way, it was on honor wearing your number last week; even here in Texas!
Enjoy your season!
May The Schwartz Be With You!

I must say that I have been a lions fan since I was about 8 years old. 20 years of rooting for the lions have not always been the most rewardeing as far as wins, but the city of Detroit has one of the top 3 fan bases in all of football. The Silverdome is the only place I have ever seen the crowd get a 10 yd penalty for rooting too loud!! Peace out Richard go root for the Pats (front runner) The real Lions fans that are out there see the same thing… potential and improvement! Go Lions for life!!!!!

For all us Lions fans, I know it’s difficult to sit back and just accept all the coaching changes over the years and know things are looking up. However, the other posters are right about one thing — if you can’t see the changes that have taken place in just one offseason and not see positive progress, then you aren’t looking closely enough.
I know people rip on our defense and rightfully so. However, in just one offseason, we now have a respectable linebacking crew. Delmas is going to be a monster — have you noticed how he takes things personally and refuses to let a wide receiver get that touchdown without running him down? He has that mean edge — with experience he will be a Top 3 in the league.
I think the offense has a solid foundation of skill players in place. It reminds me of the Cowboys from the 90′s as they were drafted and began their growth….Aikman, Smith, Johnston, Irvin. We have those players here now.
Remember, in Aikman’s first year, he didn’t win a single game and the team was 1-15. Fast forward that a few years and look at their results.
I do hope the team addresses our defensive and offensive lines, along with the secondary, in the offseason. Maybe add a 3rd strong receiver for balance in free agency.
Mayhew is shrewd with his trades and his pick-ups. Clear evidence of that already. I’m so glad they hired Schwartz. I love how he practices specific scenarios with the team so we will be prepared for when we are in more close games in the coming years.
There is a reason for hope and cautious optimism. Good luck with the Patriots Richard!

Yeah this might be a hard game for the lions, they could get lucky tho like the bengals did, but we are just counting our wins when we play the rams, browns, seahawks and cardinals. im saying Lions will get bout 3 – 5 wins this year. they got a hard schedule, even know the lions have turned themselves around by hiring great players and a great coach. Next year we could be a .500 team if we get some more easier teams to play against!
By Drew on Oct 8, 2009 | Reply
True, but last year we lost every game and we got 5 solid chances to win out of 16 games in our schedule for this year, Redskins (Won), Rams, Browns, Seahawks & Cardinals. Since we already won a game that alone would prove we did better then last year! in about 2 – 3 years we will much better of a team. example the Saints use to be called the Aints and now they are one of the best teams in the NFL, 4-0-0. If we go keep going and getting only great players we could be champs one day again
By Drew on Oct 8, 2009 | Reply
I remember the good days we use go minimum of like 7-9-0 and maxiimum of 12-4-0 in the 90′s and these so called top teams were at the bottom!

Louis,
I’ve heard NFL rookies’ burnout as the end of the regular season approaches, because they’re not ready for the fast pace and physical demands of the NFL. I’ve heard the legs are the first to go. The New York Giants offensive line said they take an ice Jacuzzi (40 degrees) to revitalize their legs. Can you comment on how your legs are holding up and what you can do to remain strong throughout the season?
By Jeff on Oct 9, 2009 | Reply
Louis play those steelers receivers tough and knock the crap out of any of them who dare catch a ball in front of you ….I’ll be watching from the upper end zone by the pepsi bottle.. so from bronco to another play hard, play smart, and most of all kick some steeler butt….. GOOOOOOOOOOO LIONSSSSS…..
By don on Oct 17, 2009 | Reply
Well, The Steelers game is over and now it is Time for the Packers one of the LIONS Rivals!
And I like your style of play at times. However when you are Just out there gunning to get a great hit on the men that you face this Concerns me a bit.
With all that concentration on making the Big hit I have noticed that you havent actually gotten any interceptions yet? Or have you? Well if I’m wrong then sorry for not being able to remember them.
the concern that I have is that I have played your position a little myself back in the Day. and that was a long long time ago. And I never had even a smidgen the talent that you have.
However the most exciting thing for me was to intercept the ball and try to take that ball right back into the end Zone!
Maybe having this deal with Jennings could help you out a bit with that endever.
Instead of laying on the big hit, Maybe you could try to take the ball away in this game.
The big hits are great, However with an interception it gives us the ball and helps us as a team alittle more than a great hit!
Turnovers are what helps win games. So Delmas let’s try to forget the BIG HIT everytime and look for that ball just a little bit more often.
If the HIT Is there and you know that your not going to have a chance at taking the ball away Then of coarse by all means lay that crunching hit right were it counts,If not though lets take that ball to the bank or the endzone as the case may be!
LIONS!

God bless you guys this year I am and always will be a Detroit Lions football fan…and Mr. Del you are one of my favorite players of all time…Seriously, I love charactor and being on a struggling team and still putting max effort out…you are a man that kids need to see more examples of. I run a gang intervention and life intervention program called Hope 4 da Hood in Wichita, Ks, and I know what it means to give max effort for seemingly no results…BUT just to let you know I may be the only one in all of Kansas, but I am a proud Lions fan, and with players like you we will be where we need to be really soon…I will try to bring some of the fellas to a game this year to let them see what it means to be a success win or loss. AND YOU MY FAM ARE A SUCCESS, don’t stop, get MORE HUNGRY, MORE FOCUS, and proove all THESE WISHY WASHY “FANS” wrong, and go out and when…I believe you guys are really close to playoff status, if not there already…Call me crazy I still believe!
