Update on Stafford

Posted by Tara Altman on November 15, 2010 – 10:53 pm

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was examined today by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama.

Dr. Andrews informed the team today that his evaluation of Matthew’s injury (which occurred November 7 against the New York Jets) is consistent with the evaluation and diagnosis of the Lions’ medical staff.

Matthew will continue the rehabilitation process that he began last week under the supervision of the team’s medical staff.

Stafford’s injury, which is what exactly. No one has really said except he injured his shoulder. What kind of injury?

This is so typical for detroit! I’m so f**kn sick of this sh*t I could puke!! Why was stafford even playn? If he was 100 percnt then he might as well go pik out a comfortable rockn chair cuz he is f**kd!!!!!

Lets be realistic here. The season is over for Matthew Stafford as are the Lions..Hill is the one who needs to complete the season. Stafford might as well rehabilitate until next year. If Swartz puts him in again I think his decision making is in question

As usual,#1 quaterback injured, backup quaterback is playing injured.
Stanton got screwed again. He’s been in the system for a few years now. He’s an excellent scrambler and plays with heart.
Sorry guys but shaun hill hasn’t showed me anything to make me want to come or watch games. I’ve been a loyal fan through bad and good, take a lot of ribbing from friends for being loyal. But enough is enough.
Give DREW a shot,at least he knows how to wiun games or come from behind. He dosn’t give up.

Every one saying now you want to win a game play detroit!
Come on jim Drew deserves to play, give him a shot you might be suprised after all these years as a 3rd stringer.

Sheryl asks the big question. What is wrong and how long will it take to fix? Is he out for the season or what? I think Stanton should start for the rest of the year to give him experience. Who knows?

Ghost of Bobby Layne…Why would we want to start a healthy QB (Stanton) when we can start a QB with a broken arm that can’t run? Are you trying to think of ways to win?….lol.

Enough with this super secret stuff Schwartz!!!! Is the kid going to play or not?

IR him already and be done with it. Stop trying to sell tickets and be honest with your fans!!

  15. By Jeremy on Nov 16, 2010 | Reply

I think that Stanton should play but not the rest of the season at starter.Hill and Stanton should share the starting position just so that Stanton can get better at accuracy , lets face it he can run with the ball when given a chance but his passing accuracy sucks.Staford should have gotten the surgury the first time and called the season a loss instead trying to be the hero and ending up looking like a hasbeen. I know that it is only his second season but cmon man he needs to do the right thing and get it fixed ,because not only will he benifit from it but the franchise will get the quarterback that they have been paying for in the end.

Stafford’s got a grade 3 A C seperation it’s a tough injury buts there’s nothing that could have prevented it. The Lions didnt put him in too soon & he’s not injury prone it is just a freak accident & it’s apparently not as serious as Sam Bradford’s grade 3 ac seperation which he had last year & had to have surgery on and he’s fine now. So thats some good news. Plus Matt new he was hurting earlier in the game but wouldnt take himself out so you should be happy Detroit you finally have a HIGHLY talented WARRIOR @ QB. Going by the time it took to recover from earlier this season he wouldnt be back till at least wk15 so rather than risk more damage for 3 games i say shut him down. I know he needs game time but I think he’s progressed a lot in 1yr. He looks like 2007 Tom Brady with a 25yr old Favre arm strength. In the 10qtrs he played this year he has 6TD’s & 1INT (which Calvin should of batted away from hall on the fade) agianst the Bears, Skins & Jets Defense thats pretty good. You could see how superior Stafford is to Sanchez while playing most of that game with a hurt throwing shoulder.

  17. By Steven H on Nov 16, 2010 | Reply

Schwartz explained the other day why he doesnt give a time table for injury returns like some teams & it makes perfect sense & thats why other successful teams like the Pats do it too. For example if he said Stafford would be back in 4 weeks that would put more pressure on the player to rush back from injury & what if the injury takes a little longer to come back from then you have the media asking why is he taking so long to recover is he not trying hard enough to recover. Then you’ll have people asking other players about his injury & its a mess so its better not to go down that road. As for not stating what the exact diagnosis is is the players & the staffs business not the worlds & they needed a second opinion to confirm or deny there diagnosis so thats why they havent explained it. They are running that team the correct way now. Maybe everyone is so use to them being a disfunctional orginization that its a big adjustment to this.

I have to agree with you Ghost. Why in the hell would you start a QB with a broken forearm over a healthy and very capable QB in Stanton? That just did not make sense to me. I also have to agree with Ed. I understand you wanting to keep things quiet, but you also have to let the fans know. The Lions front line looked like a bunch of baffoons. Shaun Hill put up some big numbers but, what good are they if you cant put the ball in the end zone? Like Coach Schwartz said, ” We did not play good enough to win this game.” That was an understatement. How can you go from kicking a teams ass, like the Jets, even though we lost, to being beaten by a team who hasn’t won a game all season?
Stupid mental mistakes. I think we have all said it before, these guys make way too much money to be making stupid mistakes like that. If I was a head coach, there would be consequenses. In the real world, if you don’t perform at your job, you usually take a pay cut. I would start taking some money away from these guys. When that happens, then compare the stats after that. I’ll almost gaurantee the stupid penalties like false starts and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties would cease. I am not talking about the league fining for this. I am talking about the organization. I don’t think it had anything to do with not being able to get a rhythm going, I think it was a lack of a sucessful gameplan and a way lack of discipline. I was an offensive lineman in my old high school days, I cannot recall ever getting a false start call in my whole career as a high school pplayer. That is because I could see the ball and did not move until it moved. I also knew exactly what the snap count was too. There would be some broke ass linemen on my team. I feel there was no way Buffalo should have beaten us. Well, see what lack of discipline will do to you? It not only takes the wind out of your team, it also takes the wind out of the fans too. VERY DISAPPOINTING GAME GUYS. ESPECIALLY WITH THE KIND OF TALENT WE HAVE ON OUR ROSTER NOW…This is the best team we’ve had in 20 years, lets bring it all together, knock off the drive killing pens, stay focused and lets win some goddam football games. The time is now. The fans have waited long enough. Thank you for letting me vent. I have been a Lions fan forever. I still love the silver and blue. GO LIONS…………LETS WIN SOME GAMES………I STILL BELIEVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me, too! I am “hopelessly” a Lions fan forever! I have to say though, it just really pisses me off when we lose a game like this because I know we are a better team than that. I agree that Drew Stanton may have been a better choice, being he’s completely healthy and I have seen him play – he can “scramble” with the best of them. In hindsite, Micheal Vick would look good in a Lions uniform.

I think it is time for Coach Schwartz to get mad and stop being the “nice guy”. Time to get pissed off and coach like your job is on the line! I’m tired of losing, too!

So many top picks and what have we got to show for it?…It’s sad and even depressing…I haven’t enjoyed football for so long now…somebody put me out of my misery and shoot this team.

Sadly, the coaches and players do not look at our blogs. There is an old saying that the coach that listens to the fans will be setting with them. Be that as it may, I think this is a great opportunity to give Stanton experience. Let him swim or sink in these next for or five weeks. And – Stafford needs to learn how to fall on his back or on his face (thats what face masks are for) and not on his sholder. Good God, three times in two years!

I propose a new NFL mercy rule When an organization FAILS for 50 years as this one has the nfl takes away the franchise and gives it to someone else… I dont care what any of you think the lions will only win 3 or 4 games a year for the remainder of thier history. This team is no better tha the last 2 or 3 years and that will always be the case

  26. By Alex on Nov 16, 2010 | Reply

To tired of Losing. that’s a stupid thing to bring up. I know the Lions are not great right now. but I believe in Jim Schwartz and Martin Mayhew are doing a good. everybody knows it be another year or 2 before we see the Lions do good. and so far Jim and Martin have picked some good drafts. One day will go all the way and make the playoffs. and For people who say they will never make the Superbowl, WELL YOUR WRONG!. look at the Tigers before they made the 2006 world series. they were crap before that, but when they made the World series in 2006, people started believing in the Tigers again. So if the tigers can go from bad to a good team (like in 2006), Then I believe the Lions can all the way too! I’m a die hard Lions fan. and I hope the Lions make to the superbowl in the near future.

I also think that Stanton should be starting. He has mobility and he has a positive attitude. He just wants to be a part of the team but coach just doesn’t seem to think he is capable for some reason, he can scramble Hill can barely run.

wow well while i agree with many of you alls opinions i also believe this past weekends game was a good example of why peterman and raiola need to be history the organization let jon jansen go i mean really the offensive line was horrible and d line i know w t f there deal was they looked like a bunch of rookies … OK now schwartz while we all understand not wanting to to tell the media to much but what about us the fans the ones who pay your salary dam the media and so what if dallas kno9ws stafford is out indefinately , shaun hill would have had a way better game had he had good timing and beter protection and i agree with the consensus why is nt stanton getting some ball time he is a scrambler hes a double threat coach now i am not trying to tell you how to do your job as im sure noone else is either we love our blue aqnd silver but that game in buffalo was a real joke and there is no way the bills should out played us i mean really calvin johnson, jahvid best , kevin smith, nate burleson, , brandon pettigrew …i will say this bryant johnson #80 ur a complete joke i sure hope they drop u in the off season u dont never catch nothing two balls right in your hands one of them in the endzone and u dropped it i mean really bro that was the winning catch but i dont think it is fair to calvin for u to put on such a lack luster performance and then expect him to pick up your slack hell even williams #12 would and is a better reciever then you anyway we love the blu and silver but this non diswcipline is getting to be ridiculous there is no way we should have lost at the very leat three of the games we have lost … C MON LIONS LETS GO FINISH STRONG

To tired of losing — Have you even watched a game and seen the talent that the Lions have, most fourth quarter points in the league!! or are you one of those who looks for the score on the eleven o’clock news? If Stafford was not such a CHINA DOLL I believe this team would be undefeated right now, They have played some really good football, better football than I have seen in a looong time. I think you are wrong in saying they will only win 3 or 4 games. This team is playoff worthy and I would not be surprised to see them there next season. Quit whinning and be a true fan.

One night the Lions are going to be on Monday Night Football again – I cannot wait to boo the shit outta the a$$h*!e Millen!! If I make it on the field will anyone bail me out of jail for kicking Matt Millen in the BALLS – let me know.

  30. By James on Nov 16, 2010 | Reply

We still need a quarter back. Obviously, Stafford can’t handle the NFL. He looks great when he plays but that is so rare. They choose a one-armed man over a young healthy guy. That tells you how little talent Stanton must have on the pro-field. (Why have they kept him? Too big of a contract for an unproven rookie? Sounds very McMillenish.) I’m tired of hearing the… “But next year….” speaches. They’ve played some good games. Shake the tree a little NOW and see if you can push them over the edge.

This blog is a good place to “vent”! I hate Matt Millen, too. I can’t believe that anybody would hire this guy after what he did to our team. I have trried to contact the NFL Channel (and others) to tell them how stupid they are for allowing this “dick head” on the air, but no luck. If any of you know how to do this – PLEASE DO!

We have talent on this team, for sure, but our #1 QB keeps getting hurt all the time. As much as I like Matt Stafford, we need to find somebody that is more durable. Yes, the offensive line needs to protect better, but even the best O-lines don’t protect the QB 100% the whole season. For now, say, give Stanton a shot, and then, look for a good QB next year. Sorry Matt.

  37. By Brian on Nov 17, 2010 | Reply

The sad part of this whole situation is that the team will not address the O-line problems in the offseason. Next year Stafford will get creamed again and lose another season, the running game will still suck because of a piss poor offensive line. On the bright side, we will probably get some new lb’s and db’s.
I have been waiting over 30 years for a great Lions team, I guess I can keep dreaming for a few more years. Being loyal to this team is giving me ulcers. Loyalty to this franchise should be diagnosed as a personality disorder. Oh well, I must be a lunatic then, still cheering for those Lions.

  38. By Ghost of Bobby Layne on Nov 17, 2010 | Reply

Stafford is young so he will be able to heal. Then he has to bulk up a bit and learn to fall on something other than his shoulder.

In the meantime we have nothing to lose in letting Stanton get some experience under fire.

To bad the company does not read these brilliant posts.

Then in the 4th quarter you realize the day isn’t going to get any better. I have been a Lions fan for 43 years. Buy far this season sucks the most because we just can’t close the deal. I am tired of we are going to be great one day, tired of the excusses, tired of the should haves and could haves and maybe’s. No other job out there tollerates this output or NFL Team. I just want to know when is my team going to make an honest commitment to winning and do it, instead of talking about it. I bought a Lions Jacket some time ago and said I would ware it when the Lions won two games in a row. I haven’t wore that jacket in 3 years..I am tired of being left out in the cold. very dissapointing this year….

I don’t understand why hill trew the ball over everybodies head and out of the end zone. the game was over take a shot to calvin or one of the other good recievers and let them take ashot if it gets intercepted it doesn’t matter it was the end of the game.i also believe you should put stanton in and give him his shot. hill has had lots of try,s with the other teams he was with and couldn, tdo anything why do you think they got rid of him.still a die hard fan go lions.

You guys are idiots for thinking stanton is a better choice than hill!!!!!!!!! He may have a broken forearm but he is still 100 times better than stanton. stanton couldnt throw the ball into the ocean on his best day, hill consistently puts up good numbers because he can actually read whats going on in front of him and he can make the throw he needs to. the only reason we fail to put the ball into the endzone is because of the playcalling. linehan, the off coord, is an idiot. im all for running the football believe me, but when your o-line cant block to open up holes there isnt any running back in the league that will be successful. even if you dont watch the game you can still tell we move the ball through the air on anybody just by looking at stats, stop worrying so much about establishing the run because it aint working, stick with what you do best, let hill throw the ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stafford is our guy but if we want him to be our guy, long-term, he should just get the surgery OR skip the rest of the season (both would mean the season is done). If he injures himself again like the last two times, I’m afraid his career will be ruined. I don’t want a Pennington situation here in Detroit. I’ve been watching the Lions for 10 yrs and finally think we have a good team. Let’s not screw it up so we can have Stafford play 1-2 games that will likely be meaningless. I’m also tired of all the secrecy. The Lions want people to buy tickets but this isn’t the way to do it, winning sells tickets.

they started shaun hill because he creamed the opposition with a 44-6 win and he gained 323 yards in the game vs the Bills. with a cast on his off hand. That’s talent and drive. our eight penalties cost us that game and our weak running offense that puts us statistically just a hair behind the opposition. drew stanton is competent, but he hasn’t performed well enough to get us a win, so either the drive or the mechanics or the talent isn’t quite there. signing Zac Robinson was a smart move. he did brilliantly in past assignments. i am confident that shaun hill and the team can pull off a couple more big wins for us yet this season, and some smaller ones, too. We should have a good season after all, now that we have enough strength in the qb department and plugged some holes with good players. i think schwartz should bring in a couple of winning coach consultants to help analyze and improve the offensive line and their running game with outsider’s eyes, and institute an inhouse fine of substantial size for offenders who commit penalties costing them yardage, especially the repeat offenders. we have a winning team; they just need to shape up on their weaknesses to get the scores they deserve consistent with their talent and teamwork. I still say, GO LIONS! RRRRROAR ON TO GREATNESS!!!!

this team is going somewhere, and the way is UP! they have the talent, they have the drive, they are sacrificing themselves every week to get there, and they have the heart to accomplish their goals. A few yahoos who just don’t learn to discipline themselves regarding penalties and a stubborn problem with rushing that needs other eyes to help analyze how to fix and improve that are all the Lions need to make all the other teams wish they didn’t have to play against the MIGHTY LIONS! This is a winning team that is improving every time they go out, and learning what it takes to take us to the Superbowl. I am betting on their taking charge of the rest of their games and that next year, if not this one, they will be wearing Superbowl rings on their fingers!

I have to agree with Thomas this is getting very ignorant on the part of the same player making the same false starts and off sides. Where are the professionals here. I moved to Indiana three years ago and I will always be a true Lions fan. But I am very frustrated with the incapability of the front office and coaching to correct such lack of discipline on this team. Time to give out some fines coach seems that just practicing is not solving these stupid mistakes. I see this team setting new first the most off sides of one player and the most false starts of any single player in NFL maybe this a trend setting all the ignorant records in the NFL. For the issue with the center Rayola he has enough experience to get his head into the game as well if the refs are watching how to handle the snap correct it Doh!!! I do believe if as a team we can stop the ignorant mistakes it is possible to string together some wins. Go Lions!!!! even though I am in Colts country.

I have read most all the responses, and like most of you feel totally disappointed by this years results thus far. I honestly believe that while Stafford is an enormous talent, he is very soft. Without a strict work out routine for him in the future, we might as well look for another QB. In regard to the talent on the entire roster, we are in much better shape than years past, but as stated in prior quotes, we lack DICIPLINE!!! I am a Schwartz fan, but somehow feel there is a disconnect communicating that fact with the players. As all of you, I am not giving up and look for better days.

How can a team with soooooo many #1 draft picks, suck for soooooo long? Matt Stafford needs a offensive line. Maybe next april we will get the #1 pick again.Build an offensive line so whoever is under snap next year will have a chance.STOP GIVING UP THE BIG PLAYS DEFENSE! I will consider us a better team when we start to win.Its all about the wins.By the way,we only have 2 wins. How can anyone say we have the best team in a long time.

Get rid of matt stafford every time he gets hit he hurt, id rather trade hime to a team without a qb like the radiers for a 2nd, 3rd round pick and draft the best qb in this years draft like cam newton, even if we get a couple more wins trade up to get him or use the 1st round pick for a linebacker that led his team in all defence stats, the 2nd round for a qb, now he can be a beast when he healthy dont get me wrong but he just get hurt to much

keep him on the bench for the remainder of the year, concentrate on him in the off season,, right now these lions bout to start punishing teams,, its gonna be them cowboys who will have to chose another qb, quick speed and severe blows is gonna start making its way with them lions.,, go lions slaughter em…

Matthew Stafford needs lessons from the running back coach on clutching the ball with one arm to prevent a fumble not two. He tucks both arms in to his chest to avoid the fumble leaving his shoulders vulnerable and yes the defense can guide your fall when holding your legs sometimes. As for the penalties one thing that makes it tough for your line is inconsistency at the quarterback position. One edge you have over the defensive line when an offensive lineman is that you know the snapcount and your opponent doesn’t allowing penatration while they are still hugging the ground. The line needs to commit more time to working with ALL quarterbacks until that rythym is found with each quarterback.
Dallas by all means should not stand a chance today unless we beat ourselves. We have seen what Kitna does under the kind of pressure that we will be happy to apply. Should be a ground breaking day for interceptions.
Keep up the progress. As a fan as long as I see a team like ours working toward its full potential……Win or Lose still puts you in the Win catagory for me.

The Lions had potential but seem flat now. If not for the last two minutes of the first half, the Lions would have one loss right now. For whatever reason, they cannot play the last two minutes of the first half. I think last week was the first time, this season, there was not a 7-10 point swing in the last two minutes.

They can finish the game, not the half.

Same is true for the last five years.

the idea of keeping the status of players a secret is to keep the other side from planning their game around the replacement players or the top players. keep them guessing is the best rule. you can look up matt’s injury. he had a 2nd degree collarbone ligament tear before, now it’s 3rd degree. there are two ligaments one above the other. they heal naturally without surgery. while he could be back on the field toward the end, it will take a full year for him to be fully healed enough not to have a reinjury. he will be back next season and hopefully by then they will have a better protective harness to keep him from actually landing on his shoulders when felled. better protection, quicker positioning and ball handling and more evasiveness on his part will make the difference. the great thing is we have shaun hill, who can really move the ball along and run, too. he is a great all around athlete and he’s playing like he really wants to win. it’ll be another week or so before his left arm is completely healed, but he’s healthy enough and slimmed down, too, to get that game winning streak started again right now. the cowboys lost their starting qb too, so we have a real chance this sunday, and i for one am banking on us winning our first away game this season today! i have a strong hunch we will win this one. had it all day long. i keep seeing surprised looks on our players’ faces when they realize they have wrapped this one up for the Detroit Lions. It will take a minute for them to let their victory sink in. from today on, the rest of the season should go pretty darned well for our team. they’re really getting it together and hanging tough. they have it all figured out; they just need to get rid of penalties to win, really. i have really enjoyed this season watching them pull together and with so much heart! schwartz has a few tricks up his sleeve for a basically rookie head coach, and i look forward to seeing his strategies develop further as he learns how to motivate his players even more. he has a good coaching style. so do the other coaches. looking forward to an improved running game today, as well. thanks, ghost, for the compliment! back atcha. HAVE A GRRRRRREAT GAME DAY DETROIT LIONS! MAKE US PROUD!!!!!! YAY LIONS!!!!! GO GET ‘EM!!!!!! CREAM ‘EM!!!!!!!

I dont know why the Coach would keep starting a QB that has a broken arm ,I dont see where he gives us the best chance to win there is a healthy 2nd round QB riding the pine.In all fairness tho we have had bad callls go against us, but they are still making alot of unnessary pentalies. As for Matthew I really hope that he can become unbreakable.I always have been a Lions fan and always will be just getting tired of losing. It has been 10 years since we had a winning season ,I hope we get 1 soon

I have been a Lions fan for more years than I wish to tell anyone. I LOVE the Lions! It is so hard to watch them lose because of penalties, some that they are guilty of. But the ones that they are not guilty of are killers. I picked the Lions to win 10 – 8 his season. Then Stafford went down. That was it. I hope they will win some more games this year, however they MUST limit the penalties. If Best is 90% don’t play him. If Stafford can not play the rest of the Season, get his shoulder repaired. If he need metal placed in his sholder, do it NOW. Also get him some special pads. Then draft a offence line for him.

Agree all you want too! It does not matter….have you been paying attention? Staunton is injured also thats why we just hired another back-up!

Another thing….Staffords injury is a new injury not a reinjury…He does not require surgery…He will be able to play in two weeks and maybe the game following thanks giving….However if it were my call He would not play until the last two games.

Shwartz is an excellent coach…he has made some bad decision this year that have hurt but no more than anyother in the game. Shwartz is the one that has built this team…do you know why he is so reserved/does not challenge/ and never seems upset at the losses..Why? Because he knows next season has been his target year all along…Next year our penalities will be very low and with Stafford healthy and Megatron also healthy the lethal dose dou will be administered!

Welcome back old friends. Though and hoped to never see you again! Thought that went became a NFL team. But you proved me wrong again. Still a big Lions fan just really getting tired of the same ole things from you guys. Like other people said you have a healthy qb on the bench and you play a guy who can’t throw more than 5 yards. You have to at least give Stanton a chance. Well good luck.

    Always a lions fan

this team is the ultimate in doling out frustrations to its fans. It’s a stigma that will eventually get broken in due course and time. The most frustrating aspect of this team is its ability to self manifest. Good teams win ugly, not so good teams struggling to get over the hump fighting with every fiber in there being seem to find ways to self destruct and this leads to silent murmurings of angst in the club house and finger pointing.
The whole crux of this situation falls on Swartz’s shoulders. I don’t see the passion on the sidelines in him, that Ditka use to display in Chicago that put the fright of King Kong in the player psyche if they phucked up and cost the team dearly.
These guys are professionals and fans demand perfection for the prices they pay to be involved with the teams success.
If Schwartz can’t get a handle on his players, dock his salary accordingly and sit the faulty perpetrators on there asses during the game.
    Where’s the accountability Schwartz?????????????????????

Here are some constroctive critiscm of the many talented Lions football players and coaches. Penalties are killing this team, I emphasize TEAM. I suggest fining each individual player $1000.00 per yard of penalties that the player makes each game. Example Fasle Start 5 yard penalty, $5000.00 fine. If that player racks up 50 yards in penalties, I guess he played for free. This may be a possibility to curtain the disastorous penalties that have cost the Lions at least 4 Wins.
I also suggest that since Vince Young is not happy at tennesee, Trade Mr. Stafford tyo tennessee or put him on IR.Shaun Hill can and has proven that he is willing to play for the team effort.
Keep up the good work, and play hard.

I’m sorry did someone say Stafford is superior to Sanchez? LOL thats funny. Stafford is superior to no one. Your comparing Stafford’s whopping 10 quaters of play. Wow 10 quarters really? I’m in the US Army I would love to call up my 1st sergant and say…Yeah I’m only going to work for about 1/6 (rough estimate) of the year! Thats great, Someone also called him a warrior? REally? Because he had a freak accident happen to him 3 times that makes him injury prone not a warrior. A glass statue, Lions should cut there losses in the un capped year and move on…Same ole Detroit.

If stafford can’t make it throughout a season with out getting hurt should we look for our starting QB in the next draft.
