Schwartz Sees the Importance of a Road Win

Posted by Chrissie Wywrot on December 17, 2010 – 4:25 pm

The Lions have two remaining chances to win a road game this season: this week’s match-up at Tampa Bay and next week’s match-up at Miami.

Detroit hasn’t won on the road since the 2007 season at Chicago, but Head Coach Jim Schwartz sees significant importance in getting a road win for a different reason.

Schwartz: “I think that the road win is very important, but breaking the streak is not as important as getting a road win. There are a lot of coaches that were involved in the streak and a lot of players that were involved in the streak that aren’t here.”

Last week, the Packers were in the midst of making a run at the playoffs and, this week, Tampa Bay is doing the same.

Schwartz: “It’s important for us to play in those kinds of games at the end of the season. We’re not playing for the playoffs, but we’re going to be.

“This team is going to be, at some point, playing for those things and we can benefit from this situation right now. Not just (to) get a win but be able to handle a situation next time it comes up.”

Finishing games has been tough for Detroit this season, so coming away with back-to-back wins, including a road victory, would be a step forward for the Lions.

Schwartz: “We have had chances to build momentum and we haven’t. There have been other times where we’ve either had a loss or something like that that maybe bled into the next week and it shouldn’t do that.

“Those are all things that we need to accomplish as a football team. But just like winning on the road, you’re not going to go very far in this league and you’re not going to do a lot of things if you can’t win back-to-back games.”

Yeah but; what’s the deal with contemplating starting Hill with a broken finger. A win is important but Drew can be a great QB with experience.

Hmmmm Jordan. My sainted old mother told me not to count my chickens before they hatched. I sure hope you are correct about the game but don’t get your hopes up to high. It can be a painful fall. If you have been a Lion fan for any length of time you know that.

You will lose a lot of blue collar support if you do not start Stanton. He started the last game against the NFL number one scoring defense and won.

I can’t believe what I’m hearing from the Sports radio Opinionists! Starting Hill ever again in lieu of any other quarterback is the stupidest thing I keep hearing!! HOW MANY GAMES DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE TO GET FIRED??? Does Hill have to lose one more? Two more? Three more? For the life of me, I just cannot understand how every new coach has the same LOSING MENTALITY??? If you start a loser, you will lose, seems pretty simple to me, but what do I know, I’m only a fan with no opinion about nothing, but common sense!! If Drew can’t get it done until Mr. Fragile gets back (and tries to win more than one in a row), then you try another one, sound sensible to anyone else, or do we have to keep losing until we get a whole new bunch of coaches again and start all over again? What makes anyone think that Hill can get anything done? Am I missing something here? Has he looked so good and everyone else is so awful? He is no leader and he is so out of shape that he should be doing weight loss commercials and has anyone even seen this guy throw a fire ball pass yet?? Does anyone even watch him in warm ups? In practice?? He has one speed on his passes and it’s agonizingly slow!!!
Just my two cents worth and I’m sure losing with Hill, intrigues everyone far more than winning with someone-anyone else……..

Rocky, did you watch last week’s game? Stanton was 10/22 for 117 yards with 2 INTs and 1TD. For most teams, that should be QB stats for maybe one half. Hill (although no shining star) is averaging 282 yards per game with 12 TDs and 10 INTs. Face it, we do not have any viable options at that position but you have to go with your most productive QB. I know you want to get Drew some experience but let him get that in the CFL or maybe PlayStation. If Stafford doesn’t man the f*ck up and start lifting some weights and building some muscle mass, we all better get ready for another disappointing season next year. Here we go again… Next year looks promising for the Lions, blah blah blah.

I know the Lions can get their first road win. All they have to do is play good football on both sides of the ball offensively and defensively

I am wondering if the Packers were their normal self, (their record indicates they are a good team) and if that was the case our defense is clicking now; then if our offense and special teams get on track we will have some victories before the end of the season. If the Packers were flat because of injuries or overconfidence then we fans are getting overconfident. We will see what the last three games reveal.

Have a feeling that the Bucs are going to be tight in this game and play very conservative – they are a young team that has played pretty well, consistent and they don’t turn the ball over a lot but they are ones with the pressure on them in a playoff hunt. If Lions D-Line comes to play like they did last week (although they won’t have the crowd behind them) and Lions can run on Bucs (who are not great against the run), I can see Lions finally getting the road win. Id rather see Stanton play than Hill, at least for this week. He had a decent game against the Bears and a poor game last week except for the winning TD drive.

Thank you USEDTOLISON for your wonderful observation of the obvious! But did you happen to watch any of the previous 10 games Hill has played this year? He has one win…..ONE WIN. I understand the idiocracy of the intentions of well being and DREAMS of what could and should be, but the REALITY is that he’s won ONE GAME! How do you like those STATS???
You, like others that drink the losing Kool Aid should give him another 20 games before you all decide if he can get it done or not….I’m sure he’s right on the verge of becoming the next Bobby Layne, Tom Brady, or Brett fav-re, in the next year or so and the only reason that he’s not starting for a GREAT Winning Team is that we snatched him up first???? HA! Go get em Hill!!!

I am getting sick of all the haters on here. If you can’t see improvement in this Lions team you have no business watching football much less commenting on it. It takes a while to rebuild a team that went 0-16 just two years ago and has been destroyed from within for 8 years prior to last year. The biggest possible mistake the Lions could make right now is to give in to the knee jerk idiots who want to make changes in the coaching staff or front office. As a die hard Lions fan for the last 30 years, I can finally say with confidence that we are just one draft and free agency period away from contending for the division and making a run in the playoffs. Our biggest and only major problem has been apparent from the start of training camp. We don’t have the personnel to play a Cover 2 defense. In order to be successful playing a Cover 2 defense, you need good LB’s and a solid secondary and the Lions have neither. A lot of teams play Cover 2 and I think we should be able to fill holes through free agency. The good news is that the D-line is a major factor in any dominating Cover 2 defense and the Lions have a great one. A solid D-line that can plug up the middle and consistently pressure a QB with just a 4 man rush makes all the difference. Look for the Lions to go after safeties, linebackers, and corners, in that order, through free agency and the draft. Call me a dreamer, call me crazy all you want, but I say if we stay the course and fill those holes, we will contend for the NFC Title next year.

I’M WITH KOKAINE-WAYNE. PEOPLE WHO DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE GAME SHOULD JUST STOP ALL THE HATE’N.THIS TEAM IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN YEARS PAST. CAN YOU 2 IDIOTS NOT SEE THE POSITIVE OUR TEAM IS DOING.GUESS NOT.CHANGING COACHES HAS BEEN OUR PROBLEM IN THE PAST. JIM HAS WHAT IT TAKES HE HAS MADE A HUGE IMPACT ON THE TEAM. AND IF ALL YOU HAVE IS NEGITVE BLAH CRAP. GO BE A SO CALLED FAN FOR SOME OTHER TEAM. I WAS CONVIENCED THAT WE WOULD BE 500 BY THE END OF THE YEAR. BUT WE ARE NOT GET OVER YOURSELVES. LOOK AT THE SUCESSFUL TEAMS. PIT, NEW ENGLAND. THEY DONT HAVE KNEE JERK REACTIONS. THEY RELEIZE WHAT YOU 2 NUT JOBS DO NOT. THAT IT TAKES TIME TO BUILD A WINNING TEAM. HEY EVEN COWER HAD A COUPLE REALLY BAD YEARS WHEN HE TOOK OVER THE STEELERS. SO IF YOU CANT SEE THE GOOD THAT HAS BEEN DONE AND WHERE WE ARE GOING, THEN JUST ZIPP IT. US REAL FANS DONT WANT TO HERE IT.AND YES NEXT YEAR DOES LOOK PROMISING, SUH AND THAT STUD DEF WILL GET US TO THE PLAYOFFS. AND STAFFORD WILL BE IN THE GYM AND HE WILL PLAY ALL 16 GAMES NEXT YEAR. THEN WHAT WILL YOU 2 CRY BABIES HAVE TO SAY. OH THEN YOU WILL FIND SOME OTHER NEG CRAP TO CRY ABOUT. GROW UP. AND FIGURE OUT THAT NEGIVETY BREEDS NEG. AND POSITIVTY BREEDS POS.WAYNE I DO AGREE WITH MOST OF WHAT YOU ARE SAYING . BUT LB IS WHERE WE REALLY NEED TO UPGRADE. STILL ALOT BETTER THAN WHERE WE WERE. SAFTIES AND CORNERS WOULD LOOK ALOT BETTER WITH SOME UPGRADED LB. ALSO REALIZE WE PLAY A 4-3 NOT A 3-4 THIS DOES EFFECT YOUR COVER 2. YOU HAVE ONE LESS LB. SO THOSE 3 HAVE TO BE VERY EXCEPTIONAL PLAYERS AND VERY ABLE TO COVER IN SPACE.CC, ALPONSO, HOUSTON,SMITH AND THIS NEW KID WE PICKED UP FROM BALT,PRINCE MILLER .WE ARE DAMN CLOSE BACK THERE.
