I’d like to see how Akeem Ayers preforms. I know he’s athletic and big, but how well does he run. Will he be a strict rush linebacker in the NFL, or is he an every down player? At 6-foo-4, 250-pounds, and someone who can rush the passer and potentially drop into coverage with ease, as well, I think he might be too big of a need to pass up for Detroit. Apart from Von Miller and Ayers, the true outside linebacker 2011 class isn’t as strong as previous years.

I’d also like to see the workout warriors of the combine, it’s always good to see the so called “freaks.” Allen Bailey, Brooks Reed and Martez Wilson are a few.

I would first, like to see the Lions sign Nmandi Asomugha that would address a secondary issue. Second, since they let J. Petersen go, I think Akeem Ayers OLB-UCLA should be strongly scouted, he also has the ability to play end.

I would like to the Lions look at picking up a good O-line player, or a good LB that can put his hand in the dirt and come off the edge if needed but also can cover, almost like a Clay Matthews. I think a DB would be good but i think that our corners where able to get turnovers and picks.

Jimmy Smith cornerback from the University of Colorado most interesting prospect. Three areas that I looked at when watching players >

    Size speed measurements

at 6’2″ 210 lbs, has timed in the mid 4.3 range in the 40 (maybe a hometown stop clock…likely a 4.4 40 guy)

    Production on the field

allowed 11 receptions in his last 2 years and only 1 of those receptions for a first down in one on one press coverage. It became very apparent that teams didn’t want to throw in his direction. And Colorado’s defensive Philosophy didn’t help much by having him play right corner only and not follow opponents best receiver. Which may have added to these amazing stats. This same fear of throwing in his direction wasn’t the same feeling teams had when they threw at Prince Amakamura. As often teams would attack him often. This showed a clear difference in their coverage skills as both played in the big 12. Smith dominated that conference as a cover corner….Prince did not!

    Skill sets

Most importantly is what I see as a player on film. Against the run he has not shown an attack mentality, something that i think can be fixed with coaching. What i do like about him is his play making ability in coverage. It starts with his situational awareness when the ball is in the air. He instinctly reads the reciever gets his head around locates the football and more importantly the flight path of the football and gets the right hands up to challenge incoming passes consistantly. Which is the very key to becoming a outstanding coverman…locating the ball during its flight path. He does this as instinctly as anyone in this draft. When looking at every great cornerback that has ever played the number one skill set has always been >>> situational awareness..locating the ball and timing. Three areas greatly draw my attention to Jimmy Smith

Lions need someone that can make plays defensively down the field against Greg Jennings, Johnny Knox, Sidney Rice etc. And a big fast corner with very good coverage instincts at 13 sounds like a steal to me. Even the guys over at football post scouting department see it.>>>> http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/scouting_department.html

There seems to be rumbling around mock drafts and scouting about Jimmy Smith. Most have him going at 23 to philly at the least now. And after the combine many are thinking his projections will be in the teens. So it likely won’t be a reach by the time the combines have concluded.

    Tyrpn smith

he is an athletic tackle with major up side. jeff backus is very serviceable and had a great year. the only bad thing is that he is getting long in the tooth. which worst case he gets moved to RG, or tyron can sit a year.

jimmy smith does sound very interesting, and i would also be very interested in checking him out

JIMMY SMITH WOULD BE A GREAT 1ST RD PICK. WOULD HELP OUR DEF. BACK FIELD FOR SURE. I WOULD LOOK HARD AT POUNCY FROM FLORIDA FOR A FIRST ROUNDER IF JIMMY IS GONE BY 13. OR TAKE POUNCY IN THE SECOND IF WE ARE ABLE TO GET SMITH IN THE 1ST. POUNCY IS A MULITY POSITION LINEMAN. I BELEIVE HE WILL EXCELL AS HIS BROTHER DID FOR THE STEELERS. LATER ROUNDS I WOULD LOOK AT OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS AND A DEF END IN THE LATE ROUNDS. HAVE A YOUNG AGGRESSIVE END TRAIN AND LEARN FROM KYLE COULD MAKE A GREAT CARRER FOR A YOUNG END GOING LATE IN THE DRAFT.

You coulda had the blindside kid 2 years ago.. Maybe Stafford would have more than 8 games standing up. Didn’t you watch that movie? … shoot, it was touching. Flacco isn’t complaining. Get the OT from Wis. if he’s still avail at 13. If a coach is tied to his QB, and his QB is tied to his LT… Then the coach is one ‘Kevin Bacon’ from Jeff Backus for his career and his future in Detroit.. I thought the line was far and away a better unit than last year but not dominant. Hey, just look at every OT in the draft this year how about that. … Then CB’s and OLB’s, SS, a QB, FB ..etc. I know a lot of people draft for talent – you did last year and got a plethora of it! Fill your gaps with mortar and solidify the team. You’ve drafted perfectly over the last two years – save for that first rd. TE (above mentioned.) who is pretty good – but still, a first rd. TE after just drafting the franchise?

I think you need to look at Mario Harvey from Marshall University. He is a was a great leader at Marshall and a very good ILB. He was one of the top tacklers in the Nation. He should be available in the later rounds. Take a look at him! You won’t be dissapointed, I promise!

  36. By Clint on Feb 11, 2011 | Reply

I don’t think offensive line is a real pressing need. We have 2 young tackles that may very well develop into very good players in Fox and Hillard. We have 2 good vets in place at tackle now.

Lets keep this Stafford “injury” issue in perspective. In all of 2010 Matthew Stafford was touched 8 times…four of them where sacks and four runs. Out of those 8 times in 3 games he was touched he managed to get hurt twice.

The Lions passed the football the 3rd MOST attempts in the NFL. YET only gave up 27 sacks ranking 6th in the NFL in protecting the quarterback…..Compare this to Aaron Rodgers who was sacked 58 times last year and you can see that the Lions do protect Stafford very well. Some how the football Gods have to bless Stafford with not getting on IR.

I don’t see any of the first round tackles in this draft or the last 3 drafts protecting Stafford any better than what Backus did this year. And if you want to try to get me to believe that Backus giving up 1 sack to Julius Peppers in 2 meetings makes him a liablitiy it will be very difficult.(who some may say is one of the top 3 DE of the last 2 decades)

No no we have more pressing needs. No need to groom a tackle we can grab one next year. Tackles are easy to project and out of the last 3 years every tackle that was selected in the first round are now starting.

Akeem Ayers fits a major need but against the run he is a easy no show. And i don’t like his lack of intensity in the run game. Von Miller strange as it sounds fits the bill better because of his motor. But likely won’t be there

Brandon Harris looks to be a solid NFL starter day one…Yet Jimmy Smith seems to be stronger in the Lions greatest area of need..and that is making plays down the field on defence. Getting a stop on 3rd and 8 preventing the catch….Harris is good as well kinda reminds me of Chris houston….i would rather go with the bigger faster guy with the great ball skills and instincts for playing the ball.

    No chance in drafting:
    Peterson
    Amukamara
    Miller
    Fairley

    Only reasonable suggestions are:
    Ayers
    Harris
    Solder
    Castonzo
    Clayborn
    Watt
    Kerrigan
    Smith – Colorado
    Smith – USC

We won’t draft a RB, WR, QB, SS, or FS with our first pick, so please stop that nonsense.

A Offensive Lineman who can be really physical, a Cornerback who can deny the receiver from catching the ball, and a linebacker. So, the one that I want to see highlighted is probably a cornerback like Patrick Patterson

  39. By johnny stevenson on Feb 11, 2011 | Reply

Von Miller, He is deadly with speed, agression. He blocks, he sacks, he intercepts. With our D-line and his rush that is the strongest addition we could make in a young draft pick. Most important he fits the profile of a Lions player, humble and deadly!!!

I would like to see the more about the kid out of Michigan State. The LB named Greg Jones. Whenever I watched a game with them that kid was all over the place. Even in the Capitol Bowl. He was the 1 bright spot on that horrible game. We need an all out guy like Suh. I know that Jones isn’t the biggest or the fastest, but he seems to be in on every play. Obviously if one of the top two corners slipped to Detroit they should take them (Peterson and Prince) but that’s not going to happen. The Smith kid’s stock has risen lately and maybe he’s a good pick too- but I would rather they picked Ayers (assuming Von is gone) or the Solder kid out of Colorado to protect Stafford because with a few other weapons (they could pick-up later in the draft) for Stafford their offense should be tough next year but he has to stay healthy so maybe they move Backus inside to guard and play Solder at LT…In the later rounds I hope they help the secondary and find another wide reciever as Bryant Johnson and Derrick Williams were disappointments last year- especially Williams whom I thought was going to be a steal when we drafted him…

If the lions were able to snag a high profile corner like nnamdi asoughma, I think thatd open up a lot of options for us with our first round pick, smith and houston played well but depth is a virtue in the nfl, and it would only help those younger guys to learn from, nnamdi . We do need a LB,OL,RB personally id love to see the jahvid best/Mark Ingram tandem i think mark ingram could be a star in the nfl. I would then like them to pluck away at the OL needs and maybe get some more depth in our LB and secondary with their later picks. Im extremely intrigued by casey matthews id hate to jump on a guys band wagon for the success his family has had in the nfl but there is something to be said about the bloodlines, im not saying hes going to be a superstar like his brother clay but he does play with the same tasmanian devil style so with some more technique and size on the guy he could be something special, so i feel with a 3rd-6th round pick would be well spent on a guy like that

ERIC…where do I start? OK, I’ll start with Cam Newton. Awesome college QB, but he is not even as talented as Vince Young. I think he will be a late 2nd,or early 3rd. Next, we need a corner BAD! Alphonso Smith is good enough to cover a #3 reciever at best. He should be CUT! All of Deon Branch’s yards and TD’s came against A Smith on thanksgiving! Houston is good but only good enough to cover a #2 reciever. I think our best bet is to go after Nmandi Asomugha. If we do that we can use our first pick on a OLB or OT. Preferably Nate Solder or Tyron Smith. If we don’t get Nmandi, then we have to get a CB in 1st round! I think we should definately trade up to get Prince Amakamura! We can get a solid OT in 2nd round if we get a CB in 1st. But whatever we do, we have to cut Stephen Peterman! What a BUM! We can move Jeff Backus to RG so he doesn’t get Stafford KILLED! And as far as Eric’s comments that we should’ve gotten Randy Moss…are you for real?! One of the things I have been proud of the LIONS for being consistant at is getting players with great work ethic and character, and promptly getting rid of players that show signs of being locker room cancer! LIKE SHAWN ROGERS! Randy Moss was a freak when he was yonger, and had more God given talent and natural ability than any reciever I have ever seen! But he has always been a lazy, selfish, DICKHEAD! Now that his athletic ability has dwindled signifigantly, he is just not worth the risk! I would rather Mayhew go after someone that still has alot to contribute…like Plaxico Burress.

Prince Amukamara. I’ve seen the footage, he seems like the only true choice for the lions in the first round. Regardless of whether you can get him or not, whatever you do, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT VON MILLER! He doesn’t fit the lions’ scheme at all. In college all he did was rush in of of the edges of the line every play. He got a lot of sacks…because he was never not in the backfield. We need better coverage, not more pressure. No lineman is good enough to go first round here either. Get a lineman in FA to play RIGHT GUARD.

These comments are ridiculous, Nate solder 1st round…screw the secondary, we can go into free agency and trades with that, we need to protect Stafford, even if he is made of glass, he is a hell of a player on the filed, and imagine if we had him for 16 games. 2nd round Rodney Hudson or Benjamin Ijalana. Stephen Peterman and Jeff Backus need to be replaced if we are gonna see Stafford play all full season (or have a Chance at least). 3rd round we draft Ras-I Dowling CB from Virgina. 4th round we get OLB Mason Foster from Washington, fast linebacker who fits the 3-4 defense.

Eric, why are you so angry? “And im sick of these scouts an nfl people questioning black quaterbacks mental capacity..its bs.the lions will never have a black quaterback anyways..dont bring up rodney peete” First of all, we are all Lions fans here, so please be respectful to all Lions fans. We’ve had enough bad years with Matt Millen to last a lifetime, the team is getting better, and we are happy with the new direction we are headed. Enjoy the ride as a Lions fan. Second, although you don’t want to talk about Rodney Peete, you also fail to mention Charlie Batch. Why? I remember reading and responding to a post like yours back when Batch was let go, and another person sited race as the reason. I will say the same thing to you. Give us a Steve McNair, a Randall Cunningham, or a Warren Moon caliber player and I think you would have a large following, but please don’t say there is something wrong with the scouts if that type of talent is not available. Third, you really need to spell “quarterback” correctly. It makes people care more about what you have to say.

Gabe Carimi is the safest pick in the draft. He has the perfect build for a starting left tackle in the NFL. He has no flaws in his game and he goes hard every play. If he’s not available we should trade down and take Brandon Harris with our first round pick. We should look for Linebackers and Interior Lineman with our second and 3rd round picks

    lazarus davis,

Yes to seeing more of Orlando Franklin of the U. I get a good feeling thinking about this kid as an RG/RT. He’s a road grader with pretty good feet; in a pinch, once he’s been coached up, I can even see him filling in at LG/LT. More protection up the middle for Matt, plus better 3rd/GL performance. Even rotating in, he’ll help the guys wear down the opposition.

Eric accidendtally sent that. Let me continue. Randy Moss takes plays off all the time, and if he is on a team that aint winning, he will quit on that team. And I’ll be damn if I have a player on my team that after a loss to his former team tells the media he misses them and gave them all kinds of props. I would cut him or trade him! Good job by Pats getting 2nd round pick for a declining fair weather reciever. As for Plaxico, he aint the smartest guy obviously, but neither is Shawn Rogers bring a gun in the airport and attempting to bring it on a plane. But he has heart though. The year they won SB Burress couldn’t even practice he was so beat up, but he performed every Sunday. And in playoffs he owned Al Harris, who at the time was one of the leagues best CB’s. And if Vick can get a 2nd chance, he should as well.Megatron on one side Plaxico on the other and Nate in te slot…that would be best recieving corp in NFL! And if we lose 3 or 4 games in a row, Burress won’t quit on us!

ERIC,I think Vince Young never could get Jeff Fisher to stand behind him. If Fisher would have not benched him all the time and drafted him a decent reciever he might have had enough confidece to lead a team. Also, if your coach dosen’t believe in you, neither will your teamates! Fisher mishandled VY! VY will be successful in NFL, he just needs his next coach to stand behind him. As for Cam Newton, I think he will be decent in NFL, I just don’t see him going as high as you do. But if Tebow can do it, maybe Newton can sneak into 1st round. Stranger things have happened(Heyward-Bey going top ten over Crabtree and Harvin). And as for Alphonso Smith, maybe I’m being hard on him, but I have been a DIE HARD LIONS FAN for 22 YEARS(Since my hometown Phenom Barry Sanders was drafted), and if we win just one game a year, damn it win on Thanksgiving! And a victory against the Pats on Turkey Day was a quarter and a half from being in the books, and almost single handedly A Smith gave that away! So my bad for being salty, but I bleed Hawaiian Blue and Silver! So I guess A Smith is a decent corner but he needs to step it up, becuase we will for sure be adding a CB, and if he can’t cover a #3 reciever he won’t be on Lions for long! I’m almost positive that Suh is in Schwartz’s ear wanting them to make a move up to grab Prince Amakamura! And if they draft like they have since Mayhew took over, we might very well se them do just that! Nmandi Asomugha + Prince Amakamura + Tyron Smith = 2012 Super Bowl!

It continues to amaze me how so many people are screaming LT. We need a RG, Peterman is worthless. Lions will address some of our needs with free agents. The draft needs can be figured out when we have signed a few players. The Lions needs are #1 CB, #2 LB, #3 RG, then depth at RB, then developmental players to back up our aging veterans at RT, C. Also, our FB’s are kind of weak.

  88. By JCraig3754 on Feb 13, 2011 | Reply

WE NEED TO PICK UP TULLOCH FROM THE TITANS IN FREE AGENCY……In the first round Prince Amukamra will likley be gone by the time detroit picks at 13.So i believe the Lions have two other options…both involve trading back to around pick 18….once you have dropped back you can either take Anthony Castonzo OT out of BC or Brandon Harris CB out of Miami…either would be a huge pickup.IN the second round i thimk you take Greg Jones LB out of MSU…he can play your weakside linebacker slot…with the addition of Tulloch in the middle and Levy on the strong side…this would be a HUGE improvement over last year….we also need to get a replacment for Raiola at center…hes too old and slow, not to mention weak, to go against the talented DT’s in our division…so in the third round i would take John Moffit OG/C out of Wisconson…they also need a saftey to go with Delmas and another reciever to play the slot….they could also add another RB and another guard to challenge Peterman for his guard spot….ALL OF THIS CAN BE DONE THROUGH THE DRAFT AND FREE AGENCY THIS YEAR…..lets make it happen Detroit!!!!

    BRIAN,
    If you read my 2nd comment on February 12th you will see I totally agree with you! Stephen Peterman has got to go! Due to the talented DE’s and OLB’s in our division(Jared Allen, Jullius Peppers, Clay Matthews),and the fact that Jeff Backus is a much better run blocker than pass protector(and he aint getting younger), he would probably be more productive at RG. Then I believe we MUST DRAFT an OT by ROUND 2. Our needs in order: 1-CB; 2-CB; 3-OT;
4-OLB; 5-OLB. We should be able to get Nmamdi Asomugha or Champ Bailey via free agency. That will take care of our 1st CB. Then I believe that Mayhew is good enough to persuade the Cowboys or Texans to trade thier 1st round pick for our 1st and 4th, or our 1st and our 2012 3rd. Then we could get Prince Amukamra or Patrick Peterson. Then I believe with our 2nd pick we could get Tyron Smith or another OT.
As far as LB, we will get back Jordan Dizon! He was really comming along before he got injured. We can snatch like 2 OLB’s in the 3rd and our remaining picks. Maybe we get lucky and get a sleeper LB in late rounds! If it would play out like that we would be alot further along than if we go OLB in 1st or 2nd! Then we use our 1st pick next year and take best LB available.
    LIONS 2012 Super Bowl Champs!

    ERIC,
I agree that it is nice to have a debate with a TRUE LIONS FAN such as yourself! It’s nice to be able to talk to someone and let some of my thought and views of my brain! Lions fans are very rare here in Kansas. And ever since Barry retired I have been listening to earfulls of shit talked about my Lions and how they suck, and the only thing I can ever say is “Wait til next year”.
Well we got rediculous talent now! And we aint laying down for no team anymore! We are some SCRAPPERS now! If it wasn’t for the refs screwing us in Chicago in week 1, and the unreal amount of pealties the 1st 10 or 11 games, we make the playoffs easy! For once I am predicting a Super Bowl for my team because I believe that the QUALITY of our players, coaching staff, and management, is unlike any LIONS team I have ever seen. And the resolve we showed in the last four games winning with our 2nd and 3rd string QB’s(Stanton and Hill, who we definately need to keep in Detroit), really gave me hope that I haven’t felt in years!
And seeing Stafford mature so much in one year makes me believe that we might have the next Dan Marino…. THROWING to CALVIN JOHNSON!!! I know Matt’s Shoulder will be just fine now that he finally got the surgery he should have had after last season! I don’t care what anyone says about his toughness, he is tough! And the three injuries to his throwing shoulder in his first two seasons I now believe is just horribly BAD LUCK! I questioned his toughness once, right after his last injury in th Jets game! It will never happen again! I now believe because he did not have the sugery after his rookie year it never healed 100%. But I know he has Heart! When I watch the miked up footage against Clevland where he showed the heart of a LION and came back in to throw the game winning TD, I get a little bit teary eyed! Say what you want about me for that, but it moved me! I am positive that if we protect Matthew Stafford he can lead us to a DYNASTY! NFC North better watch their fucking backs!

DALLAS WROTE: “You coulda had the blindside kid 2 years ago.. Maybe Stafford would have more than 8 games standing up. Didn’t you watch that movie? … shoot, it was touching.”

Do try and keep the cinema separate from real life in your mind, please. Michael Oher is a good kid, but he’s an RT in the pros. Jason Fox, whatever else may be the case, would make a better LT than Mr. Oher over the long-term.

Similarly, DALLAS WROTE: “LATER ROUNDS I WOULD LOOK AT…A DEF END IN THE LATE ROUNDS. HAVE A YOUNG AGGRESSIVE END TRAIN AND LEARN FROM KYLE COULD MAKE A GREAT CARRER FOR A YOUNG END GOING LATE IN THE DRAFT.”

Once again, pay attention. The Lions drafted such a DE in the 7th RD last year–Willie Young. As with Fox, the coaches appear very pleased with his progress. Time will tell, but they may already have a future hit at each position. Given that this is the case, they’ll not panic at either position, preferring to see how each fellow pans out.

BTW: Does DALLAS, the blogger, equal DETROIT, the blogger? If so, then you would do better to come out of the closet. The circle j*rks should be confined to middle school boys of indeterminate sexuality..

#1 FAN, I feel your pain brother in live in fla not many lions fans here either. I completely agree with all the back and fourth with you in concerns of eric. moss no way, big baby not big daddy. i think they called him big baby for a reason. i agree he is another albert. but plaxico, i’m not sure, he has some growing up to do. maybe he has while locked up. but i do agree calvin on one side nate in the slot and another tall atheltic reciever on the other. nate reminds me of hines ward, a good posession reciever knows where the sticks are at. i think backus did a good job this year, when you break down the film and see how many sacks did he really give up this year. yes we do have corner concerns but did not seem to be an issue the last four games. houston and this kid prince we picked up along with alponso we flying around the back field. again i think we are one sort back there but lets all give them some credit. they shut greenbay down even with rodgers in there.i was at the tampa game and at dallas. there was a true define difference the way the secondary played between those two games. gunther had those boys playing with heart. i would like to see one more ol like pouncy to come in along with our other young players at line. pouncy is a guy who could make an impact year one not 2,3 years down the road.OLB is another area we need to try to upgrade. DL is good but an DE in the late rounds would be great to start builing for the furture. vanden-bosch is going into his 12th year. the one thing i agree with the most is the integrity thing, a cancer in the locker room will self destruct a team. some one who has never played higher than pop warner would not understand that. hat off to you FAN#1 for seeing that and speaking your mind..

    detroit,
I agree that Mike Pouncey would be a great pick up. Is he the brother of the Steelers Center? I would also like to see Casey Matthews play against his brother twice a year. But realisticly we need CB’s! Almost every year we have all new CB’s. Probably will only bring back Houston(maybe A Smith)… so we definately need to go after Nmamdi or Champ! Then if we can’t trade up to get Peterson or Amukamara, no other CB’s are worthy of a 1st round pick, so I think we should consider trading back to later in 1st(doing so would probably get us another 3rd round pick), then we grab Solder or T Smith. I know everyone in Detroit thinks we should go OLB, but we have been building from the outside-in(until last year on D-Line) and have not gotten results! We need to do the same thing to O-Line this year as we did last year with D-Line! Granted our O-Line is not in as bad of shape as our D-Line was last year, but we must beef up our O-Line with an OT. Backus is OK…but we need a GREAT OT to keep Matthew Stafford HEALTHY!

I’m not sure if the Lions are looking for a new kicker, but if they are Alex Henery from Nebraska would be a huge asset. He’s one of the most confident kickers I’ve seen in a long time. If you don’t believe he has a monster leg and ice in his blood watch the 2008 Nebraska vs. Colorado game. He makes a 57-yard kick with the game on the line. #1 FAN. YES MIKE IS THE TWIN BROTHER TO THE STELLERS CENTER. He is the same caliber as markis. mike would be a great add to ol. I do agree we need to add a corner back. i also think delmas has all the heart of a lion but is a bit under sized for strong safety, has the speed for any postion in the back field i would move him to free safety and get a stong safety with all his ablitiy’s but bigger. then i would would look at our ol. then olb there are several smaller DE coming out this year that could be coverted to OLB. then i would look at DE. this to start laying ground work for the future vanden-bosch is going into his 11th or 12th year. he would be a great example for a young guy. however i would also look at the kidd from alabama the running back that won the hiesman was that last year? him and best in the back field would be unstopable. if we did that we could aguire some DB’S through free agency. such as champ or some one of that caliber. with only 2 wins in 08 the staff did an outstanding job with the free agency. i see even better pick-ups this year in free agency. i know one thing i dont doubt the direction our team is going in or thier ablilty to access talent. how many top players will be more willing to come to the lions now that we are headed in the direction. we finally have all the pieces in place concerning coaching staff and the front office. schwartz is a great coach and i hope he stays in detroit from a long time. he is level headed and knows what it takes to build a championship team. listen lets get to the play-offs this year. each year is a building block, yeah the superbowl would be great but solid teams are built over time and it takes years. i see 2nd round of play-offs this year and a legitament run for the big one in 2012. wel thanks for letting me ramble to all lions fans have a wonerful off season and lets get ready for the draft it will prove to be another great one for the lions i’m sure of that…. may god be with you and restore the roar in detroit…………

The draft is fairly obvious to the Lions at this point; the prize CB’s (Prince Amukamara and Patrick Peterson will be off the board and are not worth trading up for… )

    That leaves us with the three obvious needs;
Either the #1 LB Akeem Ayers or the # 1 OL Nate Soldier or the # 3 CB Brandon Harris.

Poncey’s brother will be too much of a reach unless Lions trade back 4 or 5 spots.

The cornerback is tempting; especially if our best free agent cornerback, but it is still a stretch.

Going with what’s been working for Lions; it has to be take the best available player either Solder or Akeem.

That would depend on how you feel about Stafford; protection says take the OL; but if his health won’t be an issue, then our Defense could use the boost.

Need more info at this point… at least wait till after combine… might be a surprize or two to consider.

The person I would like to see highlighted for the upcoming draft would be Martin Mayhew. This definetly is going to be the deciding factor on how well a GM he is. Trade up, down or stay at 13 and make the pick count prductively.
I hope and pray he is staying up late to (no matter who the pick is) get this pick right.

Depth at every position, for little cost. That should be what the front office should be concerned with.

    *LB Nick Bellore; Central Michigan.
    RB Armando Allen; Notre Dame
    OL Marcus Cannon; TCU
    DL Jarvis Jenkins; Clemson

and if Stafford spends the season on the bench again,
QB Tyrod Taylor; Va Tech has the athleticism to make more plays than “the Thrill Hill” or “teach me how to Drew Stanton.

I say in 5 or 6 years we need to draft the rights to Barry Sanders Jr! That dude has the potential to be as good, possibly even better than Barry Sr! He is definately further along as a freshman in HS than his Pops. Plus he is already 5’10” and runs a 4.49 40! And he runs just like his dad! Look him up on youtube and watch his highlights and you will see! When Barry retired, I thought “Well, it’s all downhill from here”. Now I that I have seen Barry Jr on the gridiron, I have no doubt we are about to be treated with Electrifying, edge of your seat, get your popcorn ready, PURE GREATNESS! And how speacial would that be if he there was a Lion on each side of his helmet!

south alabama courtney smith wide receiver 6’4″, 220, he’s been able to win jump ball battles, blow past cornerbacks and has run efficient routes he going to be undrafted but they say he is a sleeper pick l luv this dude he like another calvin johnson can u imagine to calvin johnson on your time and i hear a lot people talking about the same people when how many people from last year draft did anything what a hand full this was the year of the undrafted players i just feel like a lot of u are not looking at the fact and true talent ya’ll looking at size and speed not a person with a IQ for the game like cameron heyward football is in his blood seeing that his father played for the nfl and he is a beast for u to get two sack being doubled team not too many people could stop him all year he like 6’5 280 and i’m not for sure but prince might fall to us seeing that everyone in the beginning of the draft need a QB or a OL player so they might not be too focus on defense until later rounds

any CB, it would be nice to get one in the first round but I dont think there is one viable enough for the 13th pick. I think we should go OLB in Ayers from UCLA. I think he is strong and fast and fits the defense great. I also think we should trade back into the late teens and pick up a few other draft picks later in the season because the front office clearly knows how to find talent in the last few drafts (Levy, Follett, Avril, Sammie Hill, Aaron Brown, willie Young [would like to see him play more].) I think we could get Brandon Harris with a late teen early 20’s pick and for the right price. I do think the lions top need is CB and i think they should be willing to fork out some cash for Namdi. If you can’t get Namdi, go for Champ Baily or Jonathan Joseph for a cheaper price, but no doubt we need a veteran leader on the DB side of the ball. Still draft a CB and have that veteran mentor him like a Jedi. Alphonso is a great corner with potential in the nickle because he is too small for the outside. He knows how to make a play though. Houston, he is ok. I think he played like a starter this year but wouldn’t think that forking out a lot of money in free agency to keep him would be a good idea. Julian Peterson is gone, so make a play on someone with strength. I think someone young at the OLB would be great, someone who can tackle. I do think we should draft a 3rd WR in the 4th or 5th round who is smaller (5’11 range) who has a low center of gravity that can get into those touchdowns when Pettigrew and Sheffler are sidelined for a play. It will keep the defense guessing. Offensive tackle would be nice, but free agency is always good if you want instant results. Keep Maurice Morris. He played like a pro-bowler by the end of the season when asked to step in. He did the same 2 years ago too. I think hes a great #2 to best and best is more of a dump off running back that takes off (Eagles, Miami games). he has to find space and thats what our TE are good for. Morris is a hit ‘em hard running back that still has juice in those legs if you rest him by using Aaron Brown, who has top speed and ability like best, but a little stronger. Keep him on the roster. I think overall, we have a great team and any additions via free agency and draft are going to be bonus’. For the first time in a decade i trust the front office to do what they do best, they have proven to Detroit that they deserve to stay and bring home that Lombardi for years to come.

Ive been a HUGE Lions fan my whole life. This is the first time I can remember being sad the season was over. Lets be honest with ourselves. The Lions most pressing need is CB. The reason I say this is because the D-Line was able to force pressure and make our current CB’s look better…unless it was an obvious passing down in which we had to play against a max-protect pass route. We gave up the stupid huge 3rd and 17 plays. We have a couple “good” corners, but none that are “great.” Look at the receivers in our division. (G. Jennings, S. Rice, P. Harvin, D. Driver, J. Nelson, J. Knox, etc) We need a shutdown player to take these players out of the gameplan. Green Bay (Aaron Rodgers) picked apart the defenses of Atlanta, and most noteworthy, Pittsburgh by throwing the ball. We have to stop that threat. I would LOVE to see Detroit pick up Nnamdi. He is a great player, has great heart, and is one of the NFL’s top philanthropists. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nnamdi_Asomugha ). I just dont think Detroit will pay the $16 million per season he will command. Petersen and Prince are both great corners, but I dont think detroit will trade up to get them. What do we have to offer? (not mentioning the increased pricetag we will have to pay)

I would like to see a spot done on Michigan State LB Greg Jones. How is a MLB/ILB, who has a never-ending motor, who was a Big Ten Defensive POY not being mentioned by ANY mock drafts or people analyzing the draft? If he’s available in the 2nd or 3rd round, I say take him! He’s an intelligent and hardworking defensive player. His skills set covers both run stopping and sure tackling as well as decent coverage on a RB or sitting back in a zone scheme.

WE HAVE ALOT OF GOOD IN ALL AREAS, GETTING RID OF RIOLA COME ON ONE OF THE BEST CENTERS IN THE GAME. WE NEED A BIGG STRONG RB. LIKE PEYTON HILLIS. THAT GUY IS A STUD. LETS NOT FORGET SET THE PASS UP WITH THE RUN. OUR OFFENSE WILL BE MUCH BETTER IN THE PASS GAME IF WE CAN GET BEST HEALTHY AND GET A BIG RB. SOME ONE WITH SIZE AND SPEED MARK INGRAM FROM ALABAMA MAYBE. THEN LETS LOOK AT THE CB POSTION. COACH IS ON THE MARK WHAT EVER IS AVAIVABLE AT 13 WE NEED TO LOOK AT IMPROVING THE OVERALL TEAM. THIS IS CHAMPIONSHIP THINKING. THIS IS HOW THEY THINK IN NEW ENGLAND AND IN PTT. MAKING A CHAPIONSHIP RUN IS A PROCESS AND TAKES TIME SOMETIMES YEARS. WE BE PLAYOFF BOUND THIS YEAR EVEN WITH THE TEAM WE HAD IN 2010. THEY STARTED GELLING AT THE END OF THE SEASON. I CANT WAIT FOR SEPT . THIS WILL BE LIONS FOOTBALL THIS YEAR. COACH KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING….

Okay, just jumping in again ha. Do not listen to anyone that says Von Miller ha. I’ve watched him play on scouting videos, I don’t think he has ever dropped back into coverage a day in his life. Also, somebody said to draft a young Defensive end to learn from Kyle Vandenbosch….we have a whole bunch of them already. In fact, Lawrence Jackson and Turk Mcbride had MORE sacks than Kyle Vandenbosch last year and only a little over ten less tackles and they didn’t even start. I say, what the lions need to do is: Draft Amukamara! I don’t care how you do it, just do it.Then after that, if you still have a second round pick get a good linebacker from a 4-3 defense of course (not like Von Miller and his 3-4 colleagues). I like Martez Wilson and Bruce Carter (Akeem Ayers is good, but he’ll be gone by the next pick after you get Amukamara). Then if you can, get someone to replace Stephen “Penalty Flag” Perterman at right guard. I would maybe aim for someone who is on the lighter side of 300 lbs so maybe we can get more movement on run blocks. Danny Watkins from Baylor looks pretty good. I would prefer to go with a free agent of some sort like we did last year with Rob Sims though, because that worked out pretty well.

RYAN, I’M THE ONE WHO SAID A YOUNG DE TO LEARN FROM KYLE.WHILE MCBRIDE AND JACKSON DID WELL ,ASK WHY. LOOK AT THE FILM. MOST OF THOSE TACKLES HAPPENED BECAUSE OPPOSING OFFENSES RAN AWAY FROM KYLE. WHILE ON PASS PLAYS HE SAW ALOT OF DOUBLE TEAMS ON HIM, THAT FREED UP THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LINE. AGAIN HIS LEADERSHIP AND WORK ETHIC IS WHAT A YOUNG PLAYER NEEDS, THIS IS HOW WE BUILD. WE NEED THAT AT EVERY LEVEL TO SOME DEGREE. JACKSON AND MCBRIDE ARE GOOD PLAYERS NOT TAKING ANYTHING FROM THEM, BUT OTHER TEAMS LET THEM GO ,WHAT WERE THE REASONS?YES SEATTLE LET JACKSON GO BECAUSE HE DID NOT FIT THEIR SCHEME. ALL I’M SAYING IS AN OUTSTANDING PLAYER AT END LIKE SUH IS AT DT. I DO AGREE THAT DB IS WHERE WE NEED TO MAKE THE MOST IMPROVEMENTS,NO DOUBT,BUT I DONT THINK ITS AS BAD AS ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE MAKING IT. LOOK AT THE LAST 4 GAMES WHEN DELMAS CAME BACK IT HELPED THE ENTIRE BACKFIELD.I THINK ONE ADD WOULD BE GREAT TWO WOULD PUT US VERY FAR INTO THE PLAYOFFS. ONE THING I SAW THIS YEAR WAS WHEN STARTERS WENT DOWN WE STILL PLAYED AT THE SAME LEVEL WITH THE BACK UPS, OR CLOSE TO IT. IT REALLY APPEARED THAT THE TEAM STARTED TO GEL AT THE END OF THE SEASON. I STILL SAY IF WE WENT INTO 2011 WITH THE SAME GUYS AND ALL HEALTHY WE WOULD BE PLAY-OFF BOUND. TO LOOK AT THE DRAFT AT EACH PICK TAKE WHATEVER POSTION IMPROVES THE TEAM FOR WHO IS AVA.I AGREE PETERMAN NEEDS TO GO, HOWEVER A LINEMAN UNDER 300. NOT SURE THATS THE ANSWER.BIG AGGRESSIVE OFFENSIVE LINE IS WHAT MAKES A GREAT RUN GAME. WE DO NEED MORE OF THAT , A SUCCESFUL RUN GAME WILL OPEN UP THE PASS.THIS IS THE NFC NORTH, THE BLACK AND BLUE DIVISION. WE NEED MORE RUN. EVERY ONE IS ALL OVER BACKUS.BUT LOOK AT HIS STATS, IT WAS A BAD PLAY AGAINST PEPPERS.BUT HE GAVE UP THE FEWEST SACKS OF ALL OUR LINEMAN THIS SEASON.HE STILL HAS GAS IN THE TANK. I HAVE MEET BACKUS AND HE A VERY MOTIVATED PLAYER AND LOVES THIS TEAM.HE IS VERY GOOD IN THE RUN GAME. EVERYONE KEEPS REHASHING THAT ONE PLAY. LOOK HE GOT BEAT, BY ONE OF THE BEST DE’S IN THE GAME. BOTTOM LINE WE DID NOT HANDLE STAFFORDS INJURY CORRECTLY LAST YEAR. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT MATT DID NOT REHAB VERY WELL EITHER.IS IT BACKUS’S FAULT THAT MATT DID’NT SPEND ENOUGH TIME IN THE GYM? AT LEAST THIS IS THE REPORTS THAT CAME OUT ABOUT HIS SHOULDER. ALL THAT SAID WITH THE SURGERY AND GOOD REHAB MATT WILL BE MORE THAN READY FOR 2011. I THINK HE WILL DO WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO ON THE OFFSEASON.THANKS FOR LETTING ME RAMBLE.RESTORE THE ROAR IN DETROIT. GOOD THINGS ARE COMING. MAY GOD BE WITH ALL…

Okay, everything I’ve said about Amukamara…forget it ha. I just watched more footage of him and he gets beat downfield way too much. I don’t know anymore. The lions should just draft the most athletic defensive player on the board in the first round. Wait until the combine and get the biggest, fastest, strongest player around. that always works.

  143. By Ryan on Feb 20, 2011 | Reply

oh and the reply to me about what I said earlier by detroit made it sound like I bashed Jeff Backus. I never said one word about Jeff Backus; he did a good job last year. I just think the lions need a better right guard and the line would be complete. By lighter side of 300 lbs, I meant a range from 295-305 lbs. Not like 310-328 lbs like now. I’m just saying, lighter means most likely faster, which means faster pulls. Being lighter doesn’t necessarily mean weaker.

  144. By detroit on Feb 20, 2011 | Reply

RYAN, SORRY I WAS RAMBLING. NO YOU SAID NOTHING ABOUT BACKUS. I WAS STATING WHAT ALOT OF COMMENTS HAVE SAID. SORRY FOR THE MIS INTERPTETAION.

  145. By Ryan on Feb 21, 2011 | Reply

Regardless of all of the different picks everybody has in mind, we all have one thing in common. We want the lions to draft an athletic, fast, strong defensive player to help with the coverage. Honestly, I think the issue might not be with the players, but the fact that they get injured all the time. I like Chris Houston and definitely like Alphonso Smith (5 interceptions in 12 games). If they went injury free, which with lions players..they never do, we would do great with them. I just say, draft the most athletic defensive player, probably akeem ayers ( NOT Von Miller or anyone who basically played end) and then work very hard in practice, play with passion and drive. Then the lions will be the team to beat. Last year we beat everyone in the division once…I STILL count the bears in Game 1 haha

  146. By detroit on Feb 22, 2011 | Reply

RYAN I TOTALLY AGREE. DRAFT THE PLAYER AT THE TIME WHO IS AVAIBLE THAT WILL STRENGHTEN OUR TEM THE MOST AND HAVE THE MOST IMPACT. WE ALSO NEED TO LOOK AT THE FUTURE AS WELL. WITH THE INJURYS I AGREE HAS BEEN A PROBLEM. MORE GYM TIME AND HARD PRACTICES WILL CONDITION THE PLAYER BETTER. ALTHOUGH NO TEAM GETS AWAY FROM INJURYS ALL TOGETHER SOME THINGS CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE THIS. LOOK AT GREENBAY THIS YEAR, THEY GOT HIT VERY HARD WITH INJURIES AND STILL FOUND A WAY TO GET IT DONE. NOT THAT I’M A FAN OF GREENBAY BUT FACT OF THE MATTER IS THEY WON THE BIG ONE.AND YES I COUNT GAME ONE AGAINST THE BEARS AS A WIN AS WELL.

  147. By Steroids Free on Feb 22, 2011 | Reply

Linebackers: Bruce Carter, Akeem Ayers, Von Miller, Martez Wilson, and Casey Matthews.

Wide Receivers: Titus Young, Torrey Smith, Austin Pettis

OL: Ben Ijalana, Clint Boling, Derek Sherrod, Stefen Wisniewski, Danny Watkins, and Mike Pouncey.

DL: Cameron Jordan, Muhammad Wilkerson, Robert Quinn

Since the best shutdown corner will off the boards before 13, I really don’t care. I’d prefer they find more line help or a three-down linebacker rather than waste a pick on a guy who is not involved in every play.
