Report: Lions willing to trade CB Alphonso Smith

Posted by ttwentyman on February 25, 2012 – 4:26 pm

The Lions are willing to trade cornerback Alphonso Smith and have shopped him to at least one team, according to a report by NFL.com writer Jason La Canfora.

Smith was a second-round draft pick by the Broncos in 2009 and was traded to the Lions in 2010 for tight end Dan Gronkoswki.

Smith played in 11 games with three interceptions last season as the team’s fourth cornerback behind starters Chris Houston and Eric Wright and nickel corner Aaron Berry.

Smith has one year remaining on his contract.

If they’re thinking of trading Smith, must mean they’re serious about re-signing Wright and/or going after CB in early rds of draft – or Finnegan???

I think it is because Smith guesses every play and has yet to cover anyone past 10 yards in his career. I hope for a 7th rounder.

well all i hope for is that the lions can get it togeather and win some games this year and go for the gold.ive heard so much i dont know where to comment first. you need big guys for the defense, you need protection for stafford, you need to do something with your offense, get some one who can run like Barry, move like Barryand can hold on to the ball, and put it in the end zone.stafford can throw but he need,s not to go back so far when he throws it look at brady he steps right up into the pocket, why cant stafford do that.step up and throw, NOT back up and throw.that is why i say he needs protection. that is where the big guy,s come in to help him.i hope to go to at least one game this year.and i would like to see them win. ya gotta love those Detroit LIONS. i do.what ever choices schwarts and the rest make i hope they are good choices. thank you Tim the Twenty Man.for listening to me.ENOUGH SAID.

U sound like an idiot. The Lions won 10 games last season. Stafford had a great year. What do u mean u hope they can get it together this year. Swartz an company ha e been making great decisions since the have been in their current positions. Go finish watching your soap operas!

I see a cetrain 30+ year old defensive tackle who accounts for $5 million against the cap. Defensive tackle is arguably the lions greatest position of depth (TE the other). SLH could start in the NFL and he is 4th string… Trade Williams and use the picks to alleviate future cap problems. Delmas and Pettigrew are due a new contract soon.

Kind of disappointed, Smith has shown to have the most potential and is our biggest playmaker on the back end, but gave up way too many plays too. I would rather see Wright or Berry go than Smith.

i think u could put all our corners in a sack and it wouldn’t matter which one u pulled out. they’re all equally weak. this is definitely our biggest area of concern

Smith is a young CB that showed glimpses of being able to make plays. With one year left on his contract and not going to be resigned, he is the prime candidate for trade. We have a team full of nickle CB’s and Chris Houston. Guys like Carr, Finnegan or even the draft candidates like Jenkins, Kirkpatrick, Johnson or Harris have more upside on the outside of a defense, which is what we need. I like Avril, but if he is demanding money like Tamba Hali, then let him walk. Sign Tulloch and Finnegan. The hit the OL, DL and LB’s in the draft. Just one possibility on the draft if Avril doesn’t return. 1. Marcelus Whitney (DE) 2. Ben Jones (C) 3. Sean Spence or Travis Lewis (OLB) 4. Chris Rainey (RB) 5. Tony Bergstrom (LT) 7. Cliff Harris (CB/PR)

It may be our biggest area of concern however the Men we had on the secondary this year did step up to the plate in most Games.
and there was a lot of injuries going on with them also!
I know and will admit that I have no idea where they were in the play offs But for the most part our men were givin us the best that they had!
The secondary is as we all know an area of concern and I hope that we can get the right guy’s to come in and gell.
And the Offensive line is also a concern, at least when you consider the future.
And I believe that the OL rookies are looking good. In fact the Whole group comming out this year look’s as if we will be able to get a player that can come in and help even if we don’t pick up the top of the class player.
I still love taking The best available player that is there with the first round pick. In fact I like taking the best player on the board no matter which pick it is.
That system has served us well so far.

were paying attetion in the saints and last greenbay game tullock
could not get back to cover the deep middle part of the field on
pass plays he is a great run stopper but not good against the pass

two games we made matt flynn look like super man and drew who lol
threw for 400 yards 200 across the middle cause tullock was burnt out

i know the lions will do what is necessary to put a winning team on the field, and it still will take probably a couple more years before we can go more than 1 and done in the playoffs. i just hope we dont get jobbed by the refs like we have been the last two seasons, including the playoff game.

  18. By russbell on Feb 27, 2012 | Reply

i will second that sk and the refs get away with it they should be fined
and suspended for bad play calling also wanted to add there is a free safety
named markell martin the lions should take a stong look at him hope there reading

I think they need to keep Smith, from what I seen he can be a pretty productive corner. He’s young and with some coaching and more playing time could be a pretty solid corner.
