According to agent, Lions sign Oklahoma S Sam Proctor after weekend tryout

Posted by ttwentyman on May 14, 2012 – 10:10 am

The Lions signed Oklahoma safety Sam Proctor to a free agent contract following his tryout this weekend, according to his agent Bill Parise.

Proctor (6-2, 222) obviously did enough to impress Lions coaches this weekend and will transition right into the offseason training program with the other rookie draft picks and free agents.

Proctor was a mostly a backup at Oklahoma with 13 starts in 53 games. He ended his career with 103 tackles.

The Lions have brought in veteran free agent safeties O.J. Atogwe, Chris Crocker and Sean Jones this offseason. The Lions are certainly trying to bolster the talent and depth on that unit.

The Lions still have room for one more signing before they get to the maximum 90 allowed on the roster.

The roster shows 89 without Procter. Does Avril not count? Or, who is not really on the roster?

Only 13 starts? And just how good can a college backup be at the NFL level? Maybe the backups backup? …clearly just camp fodder.

The way Spievey played the final 1/3 of the season, the only thing he hit was the shower at the end of the game. I’ll take the back-up and give him the chance to prove himself.

Kid was buried on OU’s vast depth chart. Will be a quality nickel back and special teams player, and has potential for even more. Rookie life has to be much easier for the 4 Oklahoma kids coming in together like this.

Its just unbeleiveable how negative fans about these detroit about these lions and who ever they sign or pick up! whomever they pick up it will no thats the wrong player hes no good will see when they play this year! I dont have any problem with any of the picks or signing of undrated players they our getting younger guys and maybe he will be kickoff or punt team player sometimes you just bodies to cover and to tackle! I trust the coach and the lions top to bottom they have done a pretty dam good jar so far!GO LIONS!

Thats because they are making bad decisions (Lions Tradition). Their philosophy (BPA) was understandable, but they need to understand flexibility and reason too. The guys they are picking up are just a pure waste. The best thing about it is that I am not surprised. Millen sucked and so does Mayhew. I believe I am factoring in all sides. They really do not care what they are doing. They want to sell enough tickets to keep their heads above water.

The best thing they did in the off season was resign who they did and pick up Kellen Moore. Bentley is average and Reiff is above average and that is gonna be it for the talent pool.

Look em up…Sam Proctor, smart kid, special teams guy like Ronnell Lewis from Oklahoma and played a little safety. Ran and threw the ball effectively in high school and listed #35 athlete in the country by rivals.com.

Good thinking…build a “special” team of strong players who can fill positons as needed. That’s what Millen didn’t do…

As I said before, managing/coaching a “fantasy” team doesn’t make you an expert…Who couldn’t win with Brady, Johnson, Jackson, Sproles, Peterson, Clark, Janakowski and the Ravens defense?

Cling tight to that cowboys jersey……Go Lions!

lions fans how soon we forget that 0-16 is just no more than 3.5 yrs ago..we have come a long way and i tell ya what we have come a long way in a short time. these cat know what they are doing and there is a working order in place like checks in balances..the president down to the gm down to the coach are all working in the same direction,,,when has the ever happend…it sure as hell didnt happen in the 90s with the talent we had and let go, the lions with go 12-4 and this season or at the worst 11-5…everyone is up in arms about your secondary and that we need this guy we need that guy…our defense was in the top 15 much of the year untill lack of depth in the secondary hurt us because of injuries…we addressed the depth issue this year and im hear to tell ya were gonna be a top 15 to a top 10 d again this year with the amount of depth we have now…only thing stopping the lions from a superbowl the next couple of years is the lions themselves…lions fans stpp bitch and taking plunges of the windsor bridge because we didnt get who ya wanted draft wise or free agent wise…this team will win and win big…thank you

Bob, be sure to ring the nurse at your assisted care facility and have her up your meds. I don’t know what you’re on, but you’re way off on Mayhew and company. They are slowly and steadily building a new NFC North dynasty in Detroit. It’s the most excited I’ve been in twenty or so years about the Lions. I am looking forward to an incredible season in which we are going to shut the yaps of all the non-believers once and for all.

Sam Procter was a Backup player at Oklahoma Who Played in 53 Games.
So We know that he just Came in and relieved player’s to give them a break or when someone was injured. That Still means that he did’nt get that much playing time. Yet when he did get it he managed to pick up 2 Tackles every time that he entered a game.
So if the Lions want a BU “S” to come in and relieve our starters I believe that Sam Procter Might be the Player for that job.
And at 6′ 2″ and 222 LBS.I have to believe that when he made a Tackle that the WRs or RBs felt him hit them.
I would like to know one thing though and that is did he get any enterceptions?
That would defantly help his case.

clocking in on Bob! what in the world have you been smoking? I will give you some consideration on the rookies because and only because they have not shown what they can do as pros. But with the salary cap and resigning current players I think they got quality in the picks. Now let me say you are terrribly wrong about Mayhew he has brought a team that once was the leagues laughing stock to respectability and shall I dare say feared on any Sunday. My only regret is we as fans must not get overly excited cause now its the Lions who have a target on them they cannot sneak up on any team now. So Lions you have to be ready every Sunday cause who ever is up next knows you are coming so be ready. Lions Superbowl drive Year u heard

We might not have drafted a stafford or suh this year but we did get some high level backups and eventual replacements for some positions of strength. this teams management is smart and they believe in there plan and so do I, Ive been a fan growing up in the D since childhood ive never been more optimistic. Sisuh is with us now we have faith in ourselves detroits swagger is strong these guys are hungry and have a big chip on there shoulder they have something to prove and i believe there going to prove it or bleed trying! hell ya! I cant read minds so this a guess and a hard one at that! the lions our still working on getting him signed either he doesnt like the money or he wants a four year at a 5 or 6 year price and thats not going to happen if he thinks his last year play was a work all his own his wrong if the other ten players especially with one double most of the year which help him to get those numbers and i am not saying he is a bad player because he is but agents make there money by getting out ragus prices and exceptionally percentage of the players money! so is it the agent or aviril I dont know but I do know we cant afford to go in camp with this kind of distraction all year and expect not to rub off on the other players that will cause more problems than its worth for another good season I pray this matter is dealt with long before september!

Bob and other Lions fans that are critical of the present administration have EVERY right to do so. We can not all be in harmony about the team. There are areas (defensively) that needed to be addressed first before anything else and I too feel we faltered. We most certainly could have done better with this draft. Traded up or down, just make moves that will give us to acquire key players to fill in the roles.

I understand the idea behind what Mayhew and Staff are doing but my goodness, but not addressing our defensive woes now, keeps the team in a “rebuilding” phase. Am i glad we made the playoffs, absolutely. Do I mention the outcome of the players when interacting with other NFC North fans, absolutely NOT.

Expecting the Lions to go after top players and not washed up players like Atogwe et al, should not be shut down. We (as Lions fans) deserve better after all these years of sticking with our beloved team.

I think that it really doesn’t matter how many db’s we sign. It’s all on the defense front four. If they put enough pressure on the oppositions qb and don’t give him time to throw, it makes the secondarys job a lot easier. It would make them look like all pros. No time to throw equals less completions. More sacks. With all of the high profile d- linemen we have it shouldn’t be that hard.
