NFL.com asks: Is Calvin Johnson the best receiver in the game?

Posted by Chrissie Wywrot on May 30, 2012 – 10:41 am

NFL.com poses the question: Will Calvin Johnson topple Larry Fitzgerald in wide receiver rankings?

It reads:

“In 2011, Calvin Johnson transitioned from dynamic to dominant. The Detroit Lions wide receiver emerged as one of the game’s top offensive threats, but has he shown enough to unseat Larry Fitzgerald as the league’s top wide receiver? Daniel Jeremiah will hand out medals to the game’s top wide receivers, as well as the best linebackers, on Wednesday.”

What do you think, Lions fans?

I’m sixteen and I’ve been a lions fan since I was in the womb. I know the talents of Larry Fitzgerald are astounding, but he didn’t lead a 22 point comeback against the Vikings, or lead the league in reception yards, or even make it to the playoffs. Calvin Johnson has been the only thing the lions have had in the past few years and now is starting to draw attention to his mad skill. Larry Fitzgerald has his spurts of greatness but that’s not nearly enough to top Megatron!

You’re only as good as your last season. If Larry Fitzgerald, or any other receiver had had better numbers than Calvin Johnson, then they’d be on the cover of the Madden NFL video game, instead of Calvin. If Larry wants it again, he’s going to have to bring it, and put up better numbers. In terms of Fitzgerald, as the song goes, “What have you done for me lately??”

I would say Larry has lost his spot as top WR. Think back to the beginning of last season. Megatron was constantly disrespected. Saying he didnt deserve his madden 12 rating, saying he didnt even need to be double covered..and he has caught passes in TRIPLE coverage for TDs and led the Lions to the playoffs. Fitz is a great WR, but Megatron is more than human.

No brainer here. There aren’t many pundits that don’t agree Calvin is the best in the game.

Megatron deserves the top rating WR!!!! Look at all his accomplishments this season alone.. He set team records in single seasons and playoff single game records and broke NFL records in the playoffs!! I didn’t see Larry Fitz do that yet.. But not only did he get the Madden cover, he also was featured on NFL Network and ESPN top plays of the week numerous times!! Lead numerous comebacks for our team, not to mention the double coverage he receieved all year long.. The List goes ON and ON of what he has done.. But it all helps that he has a 5000 passing yard quarterback in Matthew Stafford!!! Go Lions!!! MEGATRON = #1 WR

Calvin is the man and Stafford is the key.

I’d say Calvin is bidding for the number 1 spot, but that hinges on him proving consistency by having another dominant season. Comparing CJ to Fitzgerald must take into consideration who has been throwing them the ball. And there’s really no debate which receiver has had the advantage in that respect. Until last season a lot of people questioned whether Calvin was even top 5. Whether that’s credible or not, it still speaks to the doubt. There’s never been a question whether Calvin is a great receiver, but to suddenly vault him to number 1 is not equitable. I’m a devout Lions fan, but I need another year of what I saw last year to put CJ on the top pedestal.

No WR has had so much against him as CJ for most of his short career like =
#1 – No stability 3 changes in HC and scheme.
#2 – 6 different QB’s 5 of them trowing to him in one year alone.
#3 – Always the focus of defense scheme, no teammates to pull coverage.
#4 – No running game to help.
#5 – No defense to get the offense back on the field.
#6 – He has most always had less pass attemps per game then most #1 WR’s.
So even with all this he still has every year had very respectable stats at the top or very near the top in most every catagory. No doubt in my mind he is the best !!!

Larry Fitzgerald is cool, but Calvin Johnson is without a doubt more talented. Calvin has had a shorter career, and no consistency until last year as far as quarterbacks, and he still put up dominant numbers. Larry is extremely talented too, but not on Megatron’s level. They are both humble, intelligent guys, not diva WRs at all. I have thought Calvin has been better for a few years to be honest. He is certainly bigger and faster than Larry. One analyst I watched last year didn’t even have CJ in his top five at WR. Bet he feels like a fool now:)

Plainly stated–CJ brings the intangibles that many players lack period. His size, strength, speed, and fearlessness will definitely award him with the Hall of Fame in the future. He has my vote now!!! I live in West Virginia and have been a Lions fan since 1984. I miss the Sander’s era, but CJ brings back the fun and excitement of watching the Lions play again.
