Lions claim CB Dontrell Johnson; waive S Alonzo Lawrence

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew continues the building process of the 90-man roster before training camp July 26. The Lions have claimed undrafted rookie free agent cornerback Dontrell Johnson from the Jaguars. Johnson still has to pass a physical on Monday.

The team released undrafted rookie free agent safety Alonzo Lawrence to make room for Johnson on the roster.

Johnson, who played collegiately at Murray State, had 11 pass breakups last year. Also an explosive return specialist in college, Johnson averaged 16.2 yards per punt return for Murray State last year. As a junior, he averaged 22.8 yards per return and had two touchdowns in 15 attempts.

Lawrence never asserted himself into the safety rotation in the offseason after the Lions signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Gulf Coast Community College following the draft.

It’s always a good move until somebody pokes their eye on that Lombardi Trophy. Go Lions! You can make it happen!

That is Sad to See Alonzo Lawrence Cut. His Highlight reel was amazing to watch. HOWEVER if a player doesn’t work to apply himself to a position in the NFL…I guess he can take his Work ethic to the AFL or CFL…or if you want to be adventurous…the German Football League…But It just stinks that a Talented kid Fell Short of his potential because of application.

Well, this has to be a move for the return game! They picked up Dillard as well. And Logan didn’t fair as well last year. Three corners in the draft, and no one thinks Jonte Green will make the squad. I wish they would have taken Michael Smith ,running back in that pick. Maybe Tampa will cut him (They also took Doug Martin) at the end of training camp, Keep eyes open Lions.
