Lions begin the makings of their practice squad

Rodney Austin played his college football at small Elon University in North Carolina, but he made a big impression on Lions coaches in training camp.

“For a guy, small college that size, he’s made a lot of positive impressions on us,” Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said of Austin before the Raiders preseason game. “Whether he’s playing guard or center, to show us that he can really take on the center role some and do that as well as play guard, which we feel is a really good position for him.

“We’ll see, but you know, after the first three weeks in pads and the first two preseason games, he’s one young guy to watch.”

His steady play through the preseason wasn’t enough to earn Austin a spot on the initial 53-man roster in a crowded offense line group, but it did win him one the team’s eight spots on the practice squad.

Austin cleared waivers Saturday and was signed to squad.

The Lions also added linebacker Carmen Messina, cornerback Ross Weaver, running back Stephfon Green and receiver Patrick Edwards to their practice squad Saturday.

Messina had a good training camp and preseason but was beat out for the seventh linebacker spot on the 53-man roster by second-year player Doug Hogue.

The Lions have three spots remaining on their practice squad.

Congratulations to all practice squad guys! We all saw how hard you worked in practice and in the games. I hope that you keep fighting to make your dreams come true. Be assured that an opportunity will come…just make sure that you are ready to maximize that opportunity when it does.

Lance Long, Dan Gerberry, and Everette Brown/Andre Fluellen should be the final 3 in.

I think that Everette Brown had a great preseason and is deserving of a spot on the practice squad, if he doesn’t get picked up by another team….

PUT LANCE LONG on the practice squad… heck, he shouldn’t have even been cut.

Everette, you are a play-maker! Alex, I’d take you over Will any day of the week. Reshard, you are a ball hawk! Best of luck to you all, take it easy on us once you make it to the big time!

I can see Patrick and Carmen getting more practice when we have so many similar or better players in their positions. I’d prefer to see Stephfon Green on the 53 man roster. He too needs practice, but so do the other backs. Green was already showing Big Play results both as a Back and returning for Special Teams. I would rank him #2 behind Smith, then it’s a toss between Bell and Williams. I haven’t seen enough production to be so optimistic about Leshoure; he might be great – but so far I’ve seen little. Logan has had a lot of touches with less impressive results (I’m not saying he’s not good – just less impressive). Green seems to be almost as fast as Best, but stronger. I’d kinda don’t like risking losing him on the Practice Squad, though we are alot better off than completely separated from him.

I just wanted to give a shout out to the Lions returning PS players. Make sure you don’t let up, because you never know when you may be needed, so make sure you get ready, and make improvements to your craft. Congratulations, you’re obviously not too far from earning a place on the starting roster.

Messina, Edwards, and Austin. Glad you got them back! Think about Jerrell Jackson-wr(Houston), Jacqius Smith-de(Miami), Desmond Wynn-og(Tampa Bay), and James Rodgers-rs(Atlanta) for practice squad. What would it cost to get Marvin McNutt-WR(Philadephia’s Practice squad?) If someone gets injured, Get Everett Brown back!!!

The Lions coaches did a great thing in bringing back Messina, Edwards, Austin, Weaver and of course S. Green. But, you have got to bring back Alex G. and Everette Brown. Play makers in training. C’mon MAN!

Stephon Green is going to give a big boost to the running game he’s one of quickest backs i seen this year.

Lance Long impressed me..Make sure he gets somewhere with the lions.

John, Long has too many years of NFL service to be included on practice squad, and Junior Hemingway and D.J. Cunningham are both available and could step in and play quality reps if need be with speed, size, and great hands.
