Delmas practices again; Pettigrew sits out

Posted by ttwentyman on October 9, 2012 – 2:52 pm

The Lions were back on the practice field today following their bye week, fielding nearly their full compliment of players.

Only defensive tackle Corey Williams and tight end Brandon Pettigrew were absent from the portion of practice open to the media.

Safety Louis Delmas was on the field again after returning to practice for the first time since training camp last Wednesday. It seems Delmas is in line to make his season debut Sunday in Philadelphia barring any setbacks.

Defensive end Cliff Avril was also at practice today. Avril left the Vikings game in the fourth quarter with a back injury and did not return. He didn’t practice last Wednesday, either.

WHO CARES! YAdaYadaYada, talk, talk, talk, same old crap I have beenb l;istening to for 50 years now! OVERPAID PLAYERS who just show up to catch a paycheck! Pettigrew should be benched like Greg Little on the Browns for dropping TOO MANY Key passes.
One of the Best Defenses in the League?????? Come on now, how many sacks, how many recovered fumbles? We need younger more athletic LB’s and just some CB’s at all. Special Teams WOW what a misnomer! Far Far from it! NO Running Backs, who cares if Best comes back, what a waste of a #2 pick AGAIN!
The ONLY GOOD Players on the Lions are Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson! Scrap the rest for new ones!

JP, Thank you. You have said everything I was going to say. I have been a Lions fan since 1959 getting real tired. Same old, same old for too many years now. Pettigrew should be benched.

Yep ditto you said it all. I am tired of all the BS media and you can’t get a reasonable response out of Swartz anyway. This year should’ve been awesome. Instead we’re embarrassed again! Wait til thanksgiving! Houston is going to murder this wanna be team!

JP and Sagmich: You comments are meanspirited and lacking in truth.
The Lions have more than two good players! Pettigrew has set and then reset the Lions record for receptions by a TE in a season. Second in the NFC last year if memory serves…

Nate Burleson set a career best standard last year with 73 catches. Young had 48 catches as a “fourth option.” These guys can play.

On defense we have a number of fine young players. I feel that Chris Houston is an excellent corner. He is tough and gritty and plays injured. Two CBs with his skill would solve many issues for us. Suh, Avril, Hill can all play. All three are young difference makers. Levy, Durant and Tulloch are solid. Delmas when healthy is one of the best in the NFC.

Jason Hanson deserves to be mentioned among the All-time greats.

Sooo…you guys must blame Ford then, right?..I’ve been a fan for 45 years, and the only constant in all that time other than having sub-par teams is the ownership. You guys are like me…tired of the same ol’, same ol’……I hear ya! I don’t agree that we should scrap everyone but Stafford and CJ, however….and considering the bag of dung that Schwartz inherited, I think they have come a long way. Not there yet, however. You can’t just shit can the whole team unless you want them to move to Toledo, or something….and I believe there problems right now are mostly mental, not physical. Now if you had said the common denominators for the last 10 years of failure are Backus and Raiola, I would agree with that 100%…It’s hard to run with no blocking….it’s hard to sit in a non-existent pocket and wait for receivers to come open…these are two big reasons why we have been so unsuccessful in this century! You can almost see what the puzzle will look like, but we are still missing a few key pieces…..

Andrea, Indeed they can play then why don’t they? Lack luster is all I have seen from the defense and offense the last four games. We do not have the time to wait for players to develope. We do not have the depth for that like some other teams do. Delmas is a good player but one of the best in the NFC I do not see that. I have watched him play he makes many mistakes himself with missed tackles and penalties. Better than what is out there now? Yes. As for Burleson and Pettigrew that was last year what have they done for us so far this year?

Mitch, Yes I also blame Ford! You are right after thinking about it we should not scrap the entire team. Who needs to go is Backus and Raiola and I agree it is hard to run with no blocking and a non-existent pocket. They never addressed the issues with this team in the draft and they picked up everyone elses bombs and injury prone players. Like you said considering the bag of dung Schwartz inherited it is better. Of course now that most of the teams have studied Stafford and Johnson they are all going to do what the last three teams did play their safeties deep. So until we can establish a good running game we are toast not to mention Thanksgiving Day against the Texans. One of the problems is everyone except for maybe the Jets and Jags have improved. The teams that were good last year are much better this season and we get to play most of them! I am sure by the time we play the Pack they will be back to playing. We are missing a few key pieces.

The fact that this an election year why everybody’s on the lions case today! the lions our in a mental state as if the won the super bowl last year then just the playoffs! There seems to be a lack of us against the world and the veterans need to hammer down on all players get the heads screwed on straight and play some football the way they can play and quit the gripping and do not read these comments or you really get down and out! the y may have gone one a season to long on the older guys on the front line lets get the younger players we do have and whats the old saying learn by fire! quit thinking so much and just play fundamental football and go from there! I would not count on best I hope I might be wrong but he has had his 6 concussion and I do not thing he will be able to play and one more hit could end it! I hope I am wrong! the only problem I see is young has not caught fire so far this year! I would use Ryan more till young is ready to play! GO LIONS!

Heres my issue.. you complain you’ve been fans for 40-50 some odd years, yet you talk trash about the lions. Yes, our whole def secondary is “under construction”. Yes, we should be 4-0. All three of our losses were by a single possession to at least tie. Its not like we’re getting blown out week after week. Give it a rest and look at stats before you act overdramatic some more

  10. By Sagmich on Oct 10, 2012 | Reply

Not trash, truth! We should be 3-1. We have not played the teams as of yet that have the potential to blow us off the field. Hopefully it will not happen. I do not know what stats you are looking at maybe last season because this seasons stats stink. Not being overdramatioc just looking at reality. Yes a fan since 1959! I have a right to be very disapponted.

Why does everyone look at every little detail about everything bad that happens, but you cant do the same thing about the good things? Like Pettigrews got butterfingers, but he’s made big plays for us which resulted in us winning games. and if you think Calvin’s the only good player on offense you’re an idiot, and should probably pay more attention. We’ve been moving the ball in every game, it’s not like we’re going 3 and out unless we can get it to Calvin for a big play? Leshoure is a better back than people give him credit for, cause he didn’t break out in his first two games he’s not worth it? Smith is even more solid this year than he has been before, Bell has been making a difference. The argument about no RB’s is stupid, we have talented backs we just need a better run blocking OL to make some holes. On most of our run plays they have to cut back and look for another hole cause the line cant make them, but the plays that they find the holes you know it. Tulloch, Levy and Durant are pretty solid, the secondary hasn’t played perfect but none do? it’s not like the lions secondary is the worst in the league, we need at least a better man to man corner or a better sS, but with Delmas coming back he’s sure to make an immediate difference. The special teams unit themselves aren’t bad, they’re just missing tackles they shouldn’t miss, that’s doesn’t make a bad player they’re just in bad positions. And the quality of a defense isn’t measured by just sacks and fumble recoverys? If special teams made the tackles in the Titans and Vikings games, we’d be 3-1 right now. Our defense didn’t give Minnesota one offensive TD, and the two big plays Tennessee had on offense are stupid mistakes, which is why we need better man to man corners. If they cant play man to man and make a play without help from the safeties, they shouldn’t be playing. The line hasn’t been pressuring as much as i’d like to see, but does that mean we should scrap our whole Dline too? The Lions can play with any team in the league, they’re not a bad franchise. Just cause you had them going 4-0, or 3-1, or you think they should be, doesn’t mean they’re bad because they’re not? We’d all like to see them 4-0, but there’s more to football than that.

These Lions look like the Lions we are all so used to seeing, remember Eric Hipple, rodney Peete, Joey H, Charlie Batch, etc etc, etc, The lions have had billy sims and barry sanders, and never did anything to build a team around one of the greatest running backs of all time, stafford is not a great qb, hes a good qb, but not a great one, johnson again, one of the best but again, they are not looking to upgrade the supporting cast, wehad some of the best recievers over the years, again, nothing done to upgrade the supporting cast. they have had and traded away some of the best defenses in the league, why? I will never again be a lions fan, for the city’s sake I hope they get to a level where they are actually competitive for those die hards that buy into the Ford philosphy of just sell tickets. This looks like a repeat of the the year they made the playoffs back in the day, then instead of building on that success, they flopped the next year again. Back to the Same Old Shxx.
That boils down to the ownership, they havent the desire to bring a winner to Detroit, they dont hold the players, or the staff, or themselves accountable
