Source: Lions claim CB Patrick Lee off waivers; release CB Alphonso Smith

The Lions have claimed former Raiders cornerback Patrick Lee off waivers, according to a league source.

The team released cornerback Alphonso Smith to make room on the roster.

Lee, six feet, 200 pounds, is a former second-round pick of the Packers out of Auburn. He played three seasons for the Packers before signing with the Raiders this offseason. He appeared in eight games for Oakland this year, starting seven, before being released last week.

He had 30 tackles, one interception, a forced fumble and four pass breakups before his release.

Smith re-signed with Detroit in October after the Lions had suffered some injuries to its secondary. He appeared in four games, with eight tackles and two pass defenses.

The Lions are expected to get cornerback Drayton Florence back off short-term injured reserve this week as well. Florence hasn’t played since breaking his forearn at San Francisco Week 2.

“He’s eligible to come back and he’s physically cleared so we would have to make a roster spot for him,” Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Monday.

“We’ve missed him on the field. He’s a good veteran presence particularly with the injuries that we have in the secondary. It would be good to get him returned.”

The team will have to release another player to make room for Florence on the roster.

They release Alphonso Smith, bring him back then release him again! That’s not right! I wish they would make up their minds!

Could Kevin Smith be the odd man out?

im not really getting this….obviously we need good cornerbacks not people on the waivers and individuals who are being cut by other teams especially the raiders…there secondary makes the lions secondary look like a bunch of probowlers…..

Agree Keiland Williams and Stefan Logan have got to go. Who is this Lee? Has anyone seen this guy play? Is he better than what the Lions are putting out there right now? Frankly, I do not remember how he did for the Pack.

Williams was cut a week or two ago and resigned with the Redskins. Logan is our only Returner, unless newly acquired Mike Thomas is ready to take over.

Williams has already been released I thought? Should be Logan but he’s the golden boy so I can’t see it.

Keiland Williams was let go weeks ago, he’s with the Redskins. We need to get rid of that bum Logan!

Great another player that nobody wants but the lions will take him lol oh you silly lions. Maybe if the Lions did’t put all their eggs in 1 basket they wouldn’t be in this predicament, yes Calvin Johnson is the best wide receiver in the NFL, they did the same thing with Barry Sanders, and they never won a championship, they pay 1 guy so much money that they can’t afford to get anybody else, that’s why the Lions nickeld and dimed their way through the draft, look at all the cornerbacks the Lions went after none of them worked they were just praying maybe they would find a diamond in the rough you can’t win football games doing that….

  13. By tommyj on Nov 13, 2012 | Reply

I mean why do you think it took so long to sign Riley Reiff because they were trying to get him on the cheap, why you think they took Ryan Broyles because he had good speed no he had a injury and nobody wanted them, Bill Bentley had a shoulder injury nobody wanted them i’m sure it was a pre existing injury that he suffered in college.. And Calvin Johnson well yes you’ll go down as 1 of the best wide receivers in the NFL you’ll go to the Hall of Fame but you’ll never put a Superbowl ring on, your greed totally robbed you of that, and you’ll find that out 2 year after year after year, and will talk about you just like we all talk about Barry Sanders here in Detroit all that talent but not 1 championship ring to show for it, what a waste of talent if you ask me, maybe you should spread some of that money around and get some players on that team that can get you that championship ring, and to Martin Mayhew you can’t win a championship with 1 good player…

So whatever happened to that CB Routt who came in for a visit?

Keiland Williams was let go weeks ago. He’s with the skins now. We need 2 get rid of Logan.

As soon as the Lions traded for Mike Thomas (WR from Jags), Logan was on the bubble.

Lions continually say that the bottom 1/3 of their roster is always in play. Smith is definately in the bottom 1/3 because he makes too many mistakes. See the holding penalty on Logan’s only good punt return of the year on Sunday?

Williams is a back-up. Not a good back-up but at least he isn’t just a special teams guy and can actually play his position, unlike Logan.

Routt must have other issues because he has too much talent to be a mid-season free agent in a CB starved NFL.

before getting rid of Kevin Smith, please consider that I will be very pissed off about this.

WE need all the help we can get we have had so many injury in the secondary its hard to play with different people filling in for others hurt all the time!

  20. By Haywire on Nov 13, 2012 | Reply

We need another defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham dosent have enough blitz packages that are effective and it keeps the defense on the field to long which makes the defense tired and also causes injuries!!! he is alot of the blame with a little from the offense getting off to slow starts!!!! he expects the Defensive front four to do all the work!!!! Get him out ASAP

Kevein is a waste I have never seen a man come down so easily I mean you can’t fake one man he has got to go

  22. By AaronW on Nov 13, 2012 | Reply

They already released Keiland williams, he signed with another team. They should give some punt nd kickoff returns to Thomas and see if he’s any better than Logan. There’s no real need to have them both.

  23. By Jon Q on Nov 13, 2012 | Reply

i agree with aaron we should give thomas some reps as a returner or else we spent a 5th rd. pick on nothing and lee seems to be a decent player this year, he has more tackles this year than he had in his whole career combined but that has to do with actually getting playing time but from what i’ve been reading he has potential. i’m still wondering why we passed out routt though

Keiland Williams has been cut and re-signed by the Washington Redskins already.

Kevin Smith is going to stay put, no doubt about it. I wish he was utilized more but I like LeShoures promise and Bell’s determination too.

I was thinking Robiskie is probably on the chopping block since they just signed Thomas.

Also, I don’t know that Stefan Logan is any worse than Mike Thomas. They should at least try their other options before getting rid of him.

I am an Alphonso Smith Fan at times. But, knowing how much we need to improve this secondary we have to let him go.
I don’t remember Patrick Lee on GB or Oakland. However this guy is the right size for the job.Being taken 2nd in the draft by GB seems that the guy must of had talent at least back in college. Maybe he hasn’t been happy where he’s been.Hopefully he get’s real happy here and helps us get into and stay in a possible playoff position!!
If these guy’s can stay healthy long enough to work together and become a real secondary unit then we might really have something.
If this player can get it together and work with Houston and the safeties maybe we could have a secondary that is hard to pass against.
Because the way that it has been is for the other teams to decide which part of the field they might feel like throwing the ball.
Please secondary start talking to each other and pull this unit together the best you can with the limited practice time that you have!
And even though Logan is a alright dude and likable player, He IS NOT GETTING THE JOB DONE! And I thought that that was the bottom Line from now on! I don’t want to be the bad guy BUT, That is what we all expect with this TEAM from now on! Get the Job done OR get CUT! NO more excuses!
I like Logan But, he isn’t getting it done! I do Not know how to spell sarinara!
But, it is time to say goodbye to whoever isn’t getting it done. BIG AND TALENTED! And. don’t know who the penalty gatherers are? But if they are legit players with years under their belts and they are still doing the same things with the same results then it may be time for their chopping block also.
WE want the Superbowl! The Giants did it with a record that was’nt the best Last year and if they can than so Can this TEAM SO get it together and NO DANG excuses and get yourselves together and STAR Player excuse free football AND GET IT DONE! GO LIONS!

Stefan logan is a no brainer to me that should be released. He has been flat, and has nothing to realy show for the season other then fumbles. Smith should be kept as he has multiple skills that help out, such as pass catching, blocking, and at times runing the ball. Loagn has well?

  27. By lks311 on Nov 13, 2012 | Reply

Would have rather seen Lacey cut than Smith.

I agree with must folks. We all the playable secondary men. Sleep walking in the secondary does not cut it. Whoever the front office puts on the field is the new story. Three home games in a row. As a fan I have to cheer the Lions on. Disappointing at times as they may be, Go Lions.

Ah yes the head hunters our out in full force! well how about Suh he has played any thing like he did last year! the lions were smart to not sign him I do not if we could even get a draft pick for him! he is resting on his past performance! like last year and he is not playing to well and i do not think he will on our team next year then again we may be bale to get him for a song! nah he would not even that at this point no he will go to another team and play like a wild man! will see who gets cut and get williams on the field so if he can run the ball on kick offs and he is a receiver let CJ,Broyles and titus on the field and put williams in there for 5 receiver set with a running back with stafford and throw the ball on first and second down let cj and broyles get the first down and run when they gear to stop the pass then run it that is stafford speciality so let him do it and go to the two minute offense at the strat of the game and run the no huddle on every down in the first and second quarter and get stafford throwing early and often so he will get started sooner then the second half !

This is stupids move the coaches have done since cutting Fonze the first time.A Good family man and role model.Great all around ball player. If Swartz cant make better personal decisions than this he will be fired. That means Gunny is gone also.

Logan’s lack of performance is a byproduct of the kickoff line being pushed up. He barely gets a shot at returning anything anymore. I get his punt return numbers aren’t good either but once again, look at how much space he’s getting, barely anything. That being said he may still be the odd one out as his salary is still based on being a solid return man which he was for both the Steelers and the Lions not too long ago. I don’t agree with letting Kevin Smith go as he is a do it all back that has played well for us. Let’s face it, when we drafted Smith our O-Line was no where near as good as it’s been for the last 2 years. Rob Sims has made the line better and Reiff was a great pickup. It’s a shame it’s too late to get something for Avril though before the trade deadline. That one hurts. And it will hurt more when we go through the same crap next offseason taking time and focus away from actually getting better.

  32. By Sagmich on Nov 15, 2012 | Reply

I agree that Logans lack of performance could be a byproduct of the kickoff line being pushed up but look at the other return guys on other teams they are still getting yardage. There were a few times this season let alone last season that he should have broke for either a touchdown or significant yardage. The man falls over his own feet at times. He is not what they thought he was going to be. He just is not. Sims and Reiff have made the line better and I feel Reif should be in there every play, since the Lions are so stubborn about having a Fullback which this team does need. Of course it will be the same crap next draft and free agency. The Lions will take who they think is the best player and they will not draft for their needs. They will also take everyone elses garbage during free agency. Same old until they clean house top to bottom. Management and coaches.

Not to blunt to all of you want a be coaches, but the staff has to make hard choices everyday. So let them do they’re job. I know as a Lions fan that is the hardest thing for all of us to do and maybe there is a diamond in the rough in the mix of it all, WE as fans need to have faith. ( As hard as that is looking up from the bottom again.) I believe in my team an if you are true fans you should too.

  35. By Sagmich on Nov 16, 2012 | Reply

There is no one on here who are wanna be coaches. We are just people who watch the entire game and can see the flaws week in and week out is all. This team cannot wait for a diamond in the rough although I do think we found him in Reiff. Logan has got to go he does nothing absolutely nothing. Try Thomas back there see what he can do. That decision is not to hard for any coach and staff it is simple relpace him with someone who can stay afoot.
