How about a new QB we really need one

Lets get Carmen Messina in there! The guy is as tough as nails and plays hard

We need a QuarterBack Fast! Honestly, why are we believing in Stafford?
He needs to be replaced, and FAST!

  4. By rob on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

No QB needed. Stafford is the man..they need someone to replace Titus young. Trade for tebow and convert him to receiver. They also need to add defensively. Better players are needed because they gave up way too many point’s this season. Draft Mr Robinson from Michigan and make him the running back.

Stafford? Well to start last season he through for 41 touchdowns and 5,000 yards. This year he throw for 4967 and as a team were second in the league in yardage. The touchdowns will have to wait until next season but by no means do we need to replace Stafford. If thats the case, we might as well bring back Scott Michelle, Charlie Batch, Erik Kramer or the last 50 years of bad quarterbacks to replace him. Did this guy really watch any of the season? We need another Javid Best replacement and Manti Te’o this offseason.

Have you ever watched football? Do you even know who stafford is? Judging by your comments about needing a qb, I’d say the answer to my two questions is a resounding no.

Why is everyone hating on Stafford? He is the best thing that has happened to this team in a loooooooong time, besides CJ of course. Explain to me why he should be replaced.

You Guys are nuts. Stafford and Megatron are Magic on the field. They will end up better than Rice and Montana. Wait and see.

Lilo, you don’t know much about the NFL if you don’t believe in Stafford.

  10. By Blayne on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

Stafford is a good quarterback. Who did he have to throw to this year ? especially the second half. So many balls dropped by receivers. He basically had Calvin and he dropped a lot also. Sure he has some mechanics to work on , but give him a break. You make dumb decisions when you have a crap offensive line and you are pressured to throw the ball quick. You need to protect a QB for him to make plays and be more accurate. So get off his back. Obviously you are not a true lions fan if you don’t see that stafford is the best QB we have had in 50 years. If he had a different O-line and receivers that didn’t drop balls all the time and receivers that don’t fumble after they do catch it and a run game he would be great. Also Linehan’s predictable play calling didn’t help much either. Lots of things have to be fixed on this team . The problems are mostly management and the need of others to actually play for what they get paid for.

what our you talking about we need to keep Stafford and get him a good QB coach you our pretty lousy on what talent is! this will be a better Year for everybody and you want to throw away a QB that threw for 5000 yards last and had the TD to go with it! you our all way out of line calling for a new QB! Monday morning lazy boy fantasy gm ! you people our nuts and overreacting big time you lose Stafford you lose the rest of the team!!!!!

  12. By BN84 on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

We don’t need quaterback, Stafford is young, very talented, can make combacks and he has got leadership as well. We need just Burleson back, and two more talented WR, a reorganized O-line, and Jahvid Best or an RB like him.

a new qb are you nuts?He is at the top in yds and if not for drops he would of been top passer

Leave it to irrational Lions fans to want a new QB. I seriously hope that’s a joke.
These appear to be practice squad type players, especially since FA hasn’t started yet.

New QB, lol, find a new team to hate.

  15. By LostCause on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

While Stafford will need playoff experience, I’d put him up against the best QBs in the league and he’s easily the best QB the Lions have had in the modern era. Matt is also the Lions best shot to win a SB. As mentioned earlier, dropped passes and blown routes are what has made Matt’s stats sag and cost the team more than a few games. That sort of thing will shake a passer’s confidence as well. Get Matt better protection, get Nate B healthy again, and get both Nate & Calvin some quality help. Add to that by improving the defense, finding a way to keep them healthy (better conditioning?), and improving the motivation on all three sides of the ball (including special teams). While I love what Coach Schwartz has built, I’m concerned that there is a disconnect between him and the players that is costing us games…

If those things happen, watch this team explode…

  16. By Wendy on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

Keep Stafford?! Have you not watched any games?! all the drops, the interceptions……you can’t coach someone NOT to drop the ball!!

  17. By Blair on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

What!?! A new QB!! Stafford is one of the best QB’s and still so young. What an amazing season he had considering Calvin is his only receiver lol.

  18. By Harley on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

Stafford is as good as gold in my eyes. It’s the O line we need to improve.

  19. By ElReyDeLeon on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

Yes Stafford throws for a lot of yards. But it takes him a lot of throws to get those yards. A less than 60% completion ratio does not make you a good QB and it damnsure doesn’t make you elite. It’s time for the TRULY “irrational” fans to face the facts. Matthew Stafford is a young Tony Romo. Have a look at the last Dallas-Washington game and you’ll see the future of Stafford and the Lions. Tons of talent, not much discipline, and poor decision making. Poor mechanics are one thing, that can be fixed. Poor decision making; well I’m pretty sure that’s something you’re born with. But go ahead, continue to turn a blind eye to the truth. Stafford has shown us who he is as a QB. It’s time we all believed him.

  20. By mitch on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

Blame all of those throws on the total lack of a running game…don’t be nuts…we’re keeping Staford for a long time!

  21. By Marlin on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

How about activating Kellen Moore. Use his talent.

  22. By HollywoodTony on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

We do not need to replace Stafford. What we need is a new offensive co-ordinator. How many times when we had the lead in the fourth quarter this year by ten points, did Linehan run on first and second down instead of trying to put the nail in the coffin of the other team (Green Bay, Houston and Indy). How many times when we needed 7 points, not three, did he either run up the middle or have Stafford search for an open receiver without ever calling an option or qb rollout play? Enough is enough. We need an OC with imagination. Also we need a new defensive coordinator. Yes we made many mistakes. But it’s as if our defense, when playing great for three and a half quarters, suddenly stops blitzing, blows coverage assignments and is embarrased by opposing teams running backs breaking huge yardage plays.

  23. By Dave on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

How about a new GM. Stafford will be just fine. The fact of the matter is that on Black Monday we saw several GM’s and coaches lose their jobs with much better records than Mayhew. Oh, and they actually had their first and second round picks playing all season. This team will never stand a chance until we change the front office. I am sure that we will take best available offensive player this year in the draft, even though we need a pass rusher, linebackers, and maybe a defensive back that can actually make a play…

  24. By Todd on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

Stafford is only 24 years old and has a 5000 yard/40 td season under his belt!!! Anyone who calls for him to be replaced is insane! The kid has had some cold streaks, but he’s a winner that always plays hard and is a proven leader. I like our odds with letting him develop. This year was an off year for him statistically, but he still led our offense down the field very efficiently a good deal of the time. If we build on our weaknesses (namely defense, and o-line), I think we’ll be an elite contender within 2 years.

  25. By Jim on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

The reason why Stafford is throwing so many times is because they are a pass first offense and plus they have in my opinion one of the best recievers in the game or ever to play the game to throw the football too, and lets not forget the lack of a running game.Theres plenty of reasons the Lions are 4-12 this year but Stafford certainly is not the blame and to even think about tradeing him or whatever is out right ridiculos. If Stafford can stay healthy and on the feild i see him passing for at least 3000 plus yards a season. Think about it people do we want to make a huge mistake like the Falcons did when they traded Farve off to another team ??? I would Hope Not !

  26. By andrew on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

stafford is fine its the the lack on the o line not many run blockers and some of the plays they had this year were crazy 3rd and ten and they do a little curl rout for 5 yards very bad play calling this year and lack of D backs. How many deep balls did they have this year not as many as last year makes a big big difference.

Ok, I am no expert but I have been following football as a religion for 37yrs.

I believe a very productive and immediately resulted draft would be:

1st round – Eric Reid FS and letting injury prone Delmas walk.

2nd round – Xavier Rhodes CB, he’s big physical and quick.

3rd round – Margus Hunt DE, this guy is a beast!

4th round – LeVeon Bell RB, big and tough, mirrors Adrian Peterson.

    5th round – Omoregie Uzzi G

    6th round – Graham Pocic C

    7th round – John Wetzel T

  30. By 3dphoto on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

There are a couple of reasons for all the passing yards, mostly due to being behind so much and a poor running attack. But the Lions really do need two things a MUCH better O-Line Coach and a much better QB Coach. Linean needs to stop telling Stafford how good he is and start point out how he needs to improve. To say well Brett Favre did not through accurately either is a horible comparisson, I dont want a less than 60% completeion rate and those ocasional “who the hell was he throwing to?” passes. He is starting to remind me of Jeff George.

  31. By Michael on Jan 2, 2013 | Reply

I would say that Shaun Hill would be a much better starting qb. Why dont we make Stafford back up and have Shaun Hill as a starter? He has proven how accurate and talented he is throughout his career.

I agree that we need anew running back and maybe another tight end but our safty and cornerbacks as well as linebackers need to be replaced. Linebackers are slow and make too many missed tackles.

Are you kidding me !!!! How can you say we need a QB, Matt is doing well ,or don’t you see the dropped pass’s, Yes he has work to do to be come a better QB, but he gives detroit the best chance to win. or do you people that think we need a new QB 1, do you think your going to get one that can throw for 5000 yds one yr and almost 5 the next, come on people has there been a qb in detroit to ever do as well, NO,
Detroit has a lot of issues but QB isnt one of them,2, dont you think we should use the draft pick on a spot that really needs help.3, its getting to old ( detroit loses and right a way everyone seems to want a new QB ) never mind all the ofter problems the team has,

Edwards should have been available and playing for most of the year.
Austin is a better OG then Peterman now.
Long has a shot at becoming a good WR.
Moore has a shot at being a decent RB, good depth.
Messina is good depth at least at LB.

The others i know little about ???

you stafford haters get a clue! the kid is 24 he will be the lions best of all times . Get him some run blockers like that tackle out of texas a&m,then he will not have to pass so much! Also the lions need to stop drafting damaged players, even if they are the best available player!

  37. By Soph on Jan 3, 2013 | Reply

For all those crying about Stafford, please take this into consideration. Yes he was not accurate at times this year. We saw him throw behind his receivers a lot this year. When you throw the ball as many times as he does in a game, you get tired. Yes he made some bad decisions, but honestly even Brady and Rodgers have had their fair share of mistakes. Remember the Lions lead the league in dropped passes. Also remember how he lost his #2, #3, #4 WR’s and #1 TE. Chemistry between a QB and WR takes more time than a week or two of practice. This is not Madden folks! Very difficult and rare to have success in plug and play receivers. As long as I’ve been a fan, I don’t recall having a better QB than Stafford. So before you burn him at the stakes, look at the above and consider if this was just an off year with all the injuries to all the receivers he had to deal with.

No disrespect intended coach Schwartz will always remain a good asst. he is A very unprepared game day coach.break down every game this past year his methods and adjustments just do not add up.this season was doomed early tenn busted this season no doubt about it.22-42 after four years the product is generic Schwartz will come back changes will be made ie Jefferson gash will be gone what a joke . Change the culture now run the entire staff out of det.get a good Qb coach start with stafford his mechanics need polished period .pass rush needs overhaul.maybe then 9-7 could be within reach 2013. Sign Jason Hanson for sure find new punter.

Mayhew here are your top choices for your number one pick.

    1. Jarvis Jones- can play OLB and help out on pass rush – HUGE
    2. Manti Teo- All great defenses Chicago, Baltimore or San Fran. have an awesome MLB

Your defensive end choices…. you have to have a push on the outside
    3. Bjoern Werner
    4. Damonte Moore
    5. Brandon Jenkins or Dion Jordan

I would pick Manti Teo. My second pick would be Kenny Vascarro or Matt Elam your missing link in your backfield next to Delmas. I would then follow with William Gholston as a third pick if he is still available. Your other picks you need to address kickoffs and punts with someone like Denard Robinson.

Like it or not, stafford will retire a lion along with Calvin Johnson. What lions need is, another big WR such as Justin Hunter Out of Tennesse, Titus Young is a slot in the NFL.Burleson is gettin old, we also need another RB thats explosive, we only have power backs, and dnt even let me get goin on tht secondary, they all should be fired including bentley, he sucks, and the DB we passed on, (Janoris Jenkins) has a great yr 4 INTS for TDs. Every coach we had made horrible draft decisions, always goin for sleeper picks. NO!! we need household names, thank god for not drafting Brady Quinn over Megatron though. Michigan great Jake Long is an upcoming FA, sign him to protect Staffords blind side.

I forgot about Kenjon Barner. Barner won’t be available during the fifth round but Chris Thompson will and yes he has a ACL tear but so what. He is Javid Best fast. No Best no Barner no Thompson no superbowl. You know you need a speed running back to complement Bell or Leshoure.

I second the Mant’i Teo selection with our #1 pick. That’s assuming he will still be on the board. He is a stuent of the game and watches film and studies tendencies. He is not only athetically gifted, but intellegent. Can you see him running our “D”? I sure can.

    Mr. Mayhew,

Even if Javid is coming back you need Chis Thompson. Chris Thompson can run back your kickoffs. It’s a win win with Chris Thompson and you should find a way to draft him. I assuming he will be drafted in the third or fourth round. Javid Best speed slowed down the DE because of his screens or flair passes on the outside. Having that check down to Javid I believe helped out Stafford’s confidence in the pocket and will increase his completion percentage. Javid, or in this case, Thompson is the best answer to a defense that blitzes. If Javid does come back you have an insurance policy with Chris Thompson.

I appreciate your insight and foresight in your postings. You’re not the bellyacher type that condemns everything and everyone because they like to hear themselves talk.
What were they complaining about last year, when Lions were 10-6 ? .

I appreciate the fact that you’re providing positive options for the future, and actually naming specific players. It appears you’ve done some homework.
I plan on also educating myself on these players.

I would like to be optimistic, but I doubt that Jahvid Best will be back. And you’re right, we do need a Jahvid Best-like player on OUR team.

Unfortunately, there’s soooo many holes to fill, and unfortunately, they may only be able to fill a few of them…..which, unfortunately, means that some of this year’s players will still be on the team in 2013, when in reality, we wish they wouldn’t be.

Keep up the good, and positive comments.

Trading Stafford would be the stupidest thing we could do. Everybody has a bad year. I bet not one person was suggesting we do that said it last year…
Give him a chance! Look at the past 10 years too. How many QBs have we gone through? We finally have somebody with potential. Though sometimes it is his fault… if we had a better offense I’m sure his completion ratio would be higher. He only has ONE player to throw too. Get rid of Young, get somebody new, and for gods sake get Javid Best back. Please and thank you. Stafford is going no where. If anything Schwartz should be fired. The thanksgiving Houston game was totally on him. If we had beaten them; we would have been so much more confident for the rest of the year and it might have turned out differently

  49. By Dave "Waz" on Jan 4, 2013 | Reply

Lydell … nice find! I checked out the video and he has great balance, and when he approaches a hole or assuming tackler, he seems to find another gear. In the NFL, speed kills. This kid has it. He does jitterbug a little like Barry. Appears to have good hands also, a Javid quality that combined with speed is missing right now. Highlites can make anyone look good, but you can still recognize quality. I hope he knows how to protect the ball. We don’t need another guy that looses footballs. Worst case scenerio, he replaces Logan.

better add ezekiel ansah from byu to your list of de. 6’6 270lbs bigger, faster, and stronger than other de prospects. when he hit a ball carrier they go down. extremely good motor. sheds blockers well. seems to find another gear when chasing down a qb. great at batting passes. when his technique is sound nearly impossible to block one on one. the sky is the limit and lions fans should expect nothing less at the no. 5 pick. will make the lions other dlinemen better. can’t double team fairley, suh, averill and ansah. fast enough to play olb. ta’o hell no not with the no.5 pick for an ilb. not with all the holes on the defense. lions need a de more.

Someone here compared Stafford to Tony Romo?
LOL! Now, that is a Joke.
Tony Romo only Dreams about being as good as Stafford.
Stafford is the Best QB that has ever Been on this TEAM. And One of the reason’s for Stafford’s Low Completion rate was the fact that he didn’t have the same WR’s That he had in Training Camp. And he still adjusted and made Good play’s with the WR’s that he had. And It was nice to see him throwing to some of his old college players. If any of you fair weather fans noticed that he still, after all this time Not playing with them, his timing Hitting his old players was still right on hitting them in stride just like he used too!
I would love for him to get his Timing down with the WR’s that are on this TEAM, and be able to hit them in stride also. Wouldn’t it be great to see him be able to hit Calvin IN stride and into the end zone like he did with his old college buds.
And Hopefully next season Stafford will get a little more time to find an open WR, instead of running around trying to get away from defender’s that are about to sack him. Yes the OL has done a better job than they did in the Past, But, not good enough to hold just long enough to find an open WR. also having a running game would also help out. Bell seemed to me to be our best Back, yes he did fumble to much, however, he did break away for some real yards a few times. The OL also could not even Open a hole through the line for the RB to get through. We Have the right QB there is NO Doubt about that. This Kid is a winner and he will prove it. I just hope that he is still here when he does.

    re: Dri Archer

He has ability. BUT, notice that on running plays he actually had HOLES to run through. See where I’m going with this ?

On kick returns, he actually had blockers taking out defensive players, opening up running lanes for him ….then he did the rest.

I think even Stephan Logan could have done well on the Kent State team.

What could the Lions provide Archer ? They certainly didn’t provide much for their own running backs and kick returners.

Everybody looks good when they have impact players around them,….opening up holes, clearing running lanes, blocking out potential tacklers.

Now, what about our LIONS ?

Will they continue to turn gifted athletes into has-beens ?

At first I wasn’t a believer in Stafford, injury prone as hell. Then last season he showed us all what he could do, 5,000+ yards, 40+ TD’s. If you look at the stats over the year and the inconsistnacy at all positions around him it aint his fault. At no point after week 4 was he with the same group of guys to throw to. Calvin was the only true threat by the end and was still putting up big numbers. Then when you look at the amount of times CJ was tackled inside of the 5 yard line its insane. We also had a lot more running touchdowns this year than in recent memory. In all honesty the people to blame would be the coaches. We were to conservative when we should have gone for the killing blow, or ran the ball instead of throwing and vise versa. I mean we fired 3 coaches right at the end of the season if that says anything.
For the team to turn around this year all we need is healthy players, get rid of some bad eggs, fortify some positions on D and upgrade the O line. As long as Best comes back, Broyles and Nate get healthy our offense will shine,. Get us a good outside pass rusher paired with Suh and Fairley and it will fix a lot of our problems. Just need people who can take the ball away.

What we need to do is draft for the defense, have fairly or williams stay healthy so suh can make them look good. Then we stop with “establish the run crap” and throw the ball like we do best. Im all for passes behind the line and let the receiver make a play like we did when we won 10 games. Thats our run game. Then we need to do WAY more no huddle. We thrive on it. But honestly a huge problem is staying healthy…that and they need to get Jeff Backus off the line and let Reiff take his spot cause he looked good the game he started. Really we just need players who can make that one play that would make the difference in the game. Honestly just get better :/
