Detroit Lions staff to coach in the Senior Bowl

Posted by ttwentyman on January 3, 2013 – 7:05 pm

The Lions will get an up close and personal look at some of the best senior prospects in this April’s NFL Draft by coaching one of the Senior Bowl squads.

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz and his staff have accepted an invitation to coach at the Senior Bowl.

Schwartz said earlier this week that he’d jump at the chance to see some of the incoming talent by coaching the Senior Bowl at the end of this month.

“I think we’re fifth in line. If it would happen, we would embrace it and we would relish that opportunity,” he said.

“I think there is some insight involved in getting to know those guys over a course of the week and it can confirm some of our scouts’ evaluations that have already worked very long and hard into getting guys evaluated this fall season.

“It can also maybe give us a different perspective on some other guys. Maybe we get a little bit more time with some other guys.”

Schwartz and his staff coached the 2010 Senior Bowl and one of the players that caught their eye from that experience in Mobile, Ala. was running back Joique Bell.

“He was a local guy and we knew him enough from here and worked him out and all those different things because he was a local kid, but we also had him for a whole week down there,” Schwartz said.

“And even though he started his career Buffalo and then he was with New Orleans, he was a guy we always sort of had in the back of our mind and our experience with him that week helped get him here. He knew our coaching staff and we knew a little bit about him, not just what we saw on film as an NFL player.”

The NFL teams with the worst records get a chance to coach the two Senior Bowl squads. Philadelphia and Kansas City, two of the four teams that have a worse record than the Lions, fired their head coaches Monday and typically an organization with a coaching change does not participate in coaching one of the squads.

The Raiders coaching staff accepted the other invitation. They have the No. 3 pick in the draft.

“The Senior Bowl is fortunate to have the Detroit Lions and Oakland Raiders as our coaching staffs this year,” said Senior Bowl Executive Director Phil Savage. “Both organizations really wanted to be here and will do a great job of coaching both of our outstanding rosters.”

Schwartz coached the North squad to a 31-13 victory in 2010.

The game will take place January 26 at 3 p.m. on the NFL Network, but it’s the week of practice that’s the real benefit for the coaching staffs as they prepare for the draft.

Whatever! Schwartz did coach the North Team to a win. So we will see! To bad he cannot coach our Lions to win. Now that is the thing he and his staff should be concentrating on.

If your looking for an RB; Kenjon Barner from Oregon. He’s greased lightening & has great hands; or draft Dennard Robinson 4th round & convert him to a run/pass HB. He takes a pitch, sweeps to the cornor, pulls uo & bombs one to Megatron: lights out baby.

    Fantastic! Smart! Schwartz and Mayhew!
This Coaching staff did a great job with this opportunity last time!
I believe that, that is also where we got a good look at Jason Fox. I know that he is still here and hasn’t made it as a starter yet, However when watching his college film he looked great and what I noticed back then is how he could move down the line and blow holes wide open for the running back to get through and take off down the Field. So I wish this Dude would get healthy and stay that way! I also wish that this Team would consider him playing the right Guard position and see if he can blow holes open there or not. If yes, and if he can pass block there too, Then that might be one position fixed.
    We could only Hope. (:
Anyways go down there and coach those young men up and win another Senior Bowl! Give them a game plan they can win with. GO LIONS COACH’S, Win!
And Find the rest of the Men that this TEAM needs to get us to the Superbowl at least 50 times!

It is the Senior Bowl. All seniors in the draft must attend two versions of a senior bowl. Depending on the coach, will a particular player play.
Season stats and film; the combine; are all measures needed, these senior bowls are popularity contests
Fifth in line to coach, little far down the line. Fifth round, hummm.

I don’t recall any great picks in 2010, outside of the 1st pick.
A lot of good Coaching the Senior bowl did then.

These jerks who call us fair weather fans are just fans of losing, and have no sense of common sense.. Lions have done nothing but lose, and your a fan of that? Wow you must be a loser and a fan of it.. If the lions would win, then I would be a fan, I am not a fan of penalty’s, dumb plays, fumbles, interceptions, dumb coaching, if your a fan of that, you have some problems.. Us so called fans are tired of the same old shit for the last 60 years! suck @ss!

If schwarts blows this years draft, he’s done!!!! way to much talent on this team to be drafting in the top ten again. Detroit needs maturity, discipline, intelligence, leadership, heart, desire, integrity, wisdom, and a lot more!! defense wins championships. remember that. always has always will. Thats why manti te’o
should be their pick. 1st pick requires big$$$. so with that being said, i’ll take 100 tackles a year for the next ten years. That to me is worth the $$$. O-line and Db’s
should take up the rest of the rounds.

discodan, That is why I said what I said. I do not recall any great picks except the first pick in 2010. Expect the same this draft.

Fans and sports writers can spin the lions season as they wish but coaching in the nfl is not trail by error.coaching the senior bowl what players show up? Spin this. Mayhew and Schwartz should forfeit there pay the product they put in the arena was a D- What job can you point to allows this nonsense then says do it again.Wake up mayhew.still thinks best possible player should be drafted . How’s that working out ? I sound hard but I believe kick em while there down guide them to there next team. Mission statemt should be moving forward mayhem and Schwartz can’t get there!
