Avril turned down a 3 year $30 million deal last season and that’s why we used the tag, it wasn’t about him getting a “taste” of franchise tag money. Also Avril lines up against Right Tackles not Left Tackles, which makes him worth even less in my eyes. To his credit though he is probably the most coveted FA DE right now. I agree with you however, he’s not worth the money it’s going to take to hold on to him for Detroit.

I am so glad Avril didn’t accept the 3 year deal we offered last year. He has potential but isn’t worth the money. I’d offer him six million a year and if not we can find better in the draft. His agent needs to talk some sense into him. He can try free agency but I don’t see many takers at 10 or 12 million a year. Keep dreaming pal. Go Lions.

we would not pay him that much so the difference is a yer later he wort less then he was payed last trade for draft picks1

Last year should be a very big WARNING against Detroit using the Franchise tag.

We could have signed Avril for less than the tag to a long term contract and after he had a taste of $10.6 million for a season, he’s not signing anywhere for under $11 million. He’s barely worth $5 million. He doesn’t dominate the game. A good left tackle can shut him down one on one. He cheery pick his sacks usually waiting for blown assignments. Can’t pressure QB’s if there is even a hint at a double teams.

It’s time to part ways with Avril if he doesn’t agree to a pay cut.

And this should be a double warning too. Don’t drag out contract negotiations. Get them done fast so that everybody can participate in OTA’s. As much as it pains me, let the people go that don’t want to come to quick terms. It’s a locker room poison to drag out these contract talks.
