Lions claim DB DeQuan Menzie off waivers; release DB Conroy Black

The Lions have claimed defensive back DeQuan Menzie off waivers from Kansas City.

A fifth-round pick by Kansas City last year, Menzie (5-11, 202) spent his rookie season on injured reserve after suffering a hip flexor injury.

The former Alabama cornerback has some versatility in his game and can play both cornerback and safety. That’s a trait the Lions like in their secondary players.

Last week, the Lions claimed linebacker Cory Greenwood off waivers from the Chiefs and guard Derek Hardman from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The team released defensive back Conroy Black, which still puts them at 89 players on the roster.

With the many free agents Detroit has picked up last year and now this year, the Lions need the free agents to step up.
The Lons secondary needs players. Menize has a golden opprotunity to make his mark. The same with Greenwood.
The weak lnks in the Lions defense is the closing speed of the Linebackers and a Secondary that can stay heathly.
If they close up the gap on the DE’s maybe these guys can have a chance. I am not in favor of the wide nine. It has not impressed me in the little bit. It has been eliminated in all college and pro programs except one, the Lions. No Wide Nine

WE could use another LB. Any chance the Lions can get Dwight Freeney?

I read an article the other day, and the guy said, and I agree, that Dwight Freeny is at the end of his career and is looking for one last big payday before he retires. If he’s right getting Freeny would be a major mistake.
The guy can get a huge one year contract, take it easy, then retire. The Lions need players that will help them win now, Freeny is a gamble the Lions don’t need to bet on.

The SEC plays alot of man technique at corner and zone up top…well that can really be helpful with the lions acquisition of a player like Menzie and he was anall american at bama….sounds like a good deal for a seconday that was burned on several occasions last year at the end of regulation

I can play both positions, doesn’t mean I’m any good at either. Menzie was released for a reason. Maybe he lost some strength or quickness laying/sitting on his backside for a year waiting for the injury to heal. It’s a common rookie mistake that ends careers before they start.

Why did we sign a free agent that was injured all last season?
