Report: Amari Spievey can have charges dropped upon completion of counseling

Posted by ttwentyman on April 11, 2013 – 3:21 pm

Detroit Lions safety Amari Spievey had his court date regarding charges of third degree assault, risk of injury to a child and disorderly conduct in Middletown, Conn., pushed back to June 28, according to the Middletown News.

Meanwhile, Spievey was granted a request to participate in a family violence education program “out of state” (presumably in Michigan), which should let him take part in the Lions’ offseason training program that begins next week.

If he successfully completes his counseling sessions by June 28, all charges against him will be dismissed, according to the report.

Spievey was charged following a dispute over child support with his girlfriend and the mother of his child Lisamarie Santos on March 27. Santos was also charged on two counts.

Amari Spievey and Kassim Osgood agree to one-year deals

Posted by ttwentyman on March 12, 2013 – 5:05 pm

The Detroit Lions have agreed to terms on one-year deals with both Amari Spievey and Kassim Osgood.

The Lions did not make Spievey a restricted free-agent tender offer, but the two sides agreed on a deal before the start of free agency, his agent Andy Simms confirmed.

Spievey, who finished the season on injured reserve, has suffered two concussions in a seven-month period, but was given the okay to resume contact in his exit physical after the season.

The Lions tendered contracts to their other two restricted free agents, Jason Fox and Willie Young.

ProFootballTalk.com was the first to report that the team was re-signing special teams ace Osgood, who is one of the league’s best special teamers.

Lions place S Amari Spievey on IR; activate CB Drayton Florence

Posted by ttwentyman on November 17, 2012 – 6:28 pm

The Lions placed safety Amari Spievey on injured reserve today, ending his 2012 season.

Spievey has still been feeling the lingering effects from a concussion suffered in late October at Chicago and has yet to be cleared to resume contact.

The team activated cornerback Drayton Florence from short-term injured reserve to take Spievey’s spot on the 53-man roster.  Florence will play Sunday when the Lions host Green Bay, and there’s a chance he could even start at right cornerback.

“He’s an exceptional veteran player,” Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham said of Florence on Friday. “He’s like a lot of the older guys I’ve had. He learned to study the game a long time ago. I really like the way he’s moved in practice and he’s going to get a big load. How much I can’t tell you right now, but we expect him to play and play well.”

Florence started at left cornerback in a Week 2 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in place of Chris Houston, who was out due to an ankle injury. Florence broke his forearm in that game and went on short-term IR shortly after.

Spievey had missed the Lions last three games since suffering his concussion, his second in less than a year. He had one in the team’s wild-card loss to the Saints in January.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz was asked last week if Spievey was in the same concussion category as Jahvid Best, but he said he didn’t believe he was.

Best went on injured reserve last October and still hasn’t been cleared to return to football.

Spievey and Williams ruled out for Sunday; Delmas doubtful

Posted by ttwentyman on November 16, 2012 – 5:00 pm

The Lions are likely to be without three defensive starters Sunday when they host Green Bay in a key NFC North matchup.

The team has already ruled out safety Amari Spievey (concussion) and defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee), and has listed safety Louis Delmas as doubtful with knee injury.

All three players did not practice all week.

Delmas will miss his third straight game and Spievey his fourth. Delmas also missed the team’s first four games this season.

Williams hasn’t played since aggravating a previous knee injury at Jacksonville a couple weeks ago.

Cornerback Chris Houston (ankle) is listed as questionable along with receiver Calvin Johnson (knee), though it’s expected that both with play and start.

Houston injured his left ankle in the fourth quarter at Minnesota last week and did not return. He’s been limited in practice the last two days after sitting out practice Wednesday.

Calvin Johnson was on the same regimen as Houston, sitting out Wednesday and practicing in limited fashion Thursday and Friday.

Defensive end Cliff Avril (back), safety Erik Coleman (eye), kicker Jason Hanson (foot), linebacker Ashlee Palmer (chest) and receiver Titus Young (knee) are listed as probable.

Lions still without Delmas, Spievey and Williams

Posted by ttwentyman on November 16, 2012 – 1:19 pm

The Lions were still without safeties Louis Delmas and Amari Spievey and defensive tackle Corey Williams on the practice field Friday.

All three have not practiced at all this week, putting their availability for Sunday’s game vs. Green Bay in question.

Delmas hasn’t played since injuring his left knee in the third quarter victory over Seattle in late October. He missed the first four games of the year with an injury to the same knee.

Spievey hasn’t played since suffering a concussion at Chicago Oct. 22. He’s yet to be cleared for contact by an independent neurologist.

Williams missed last week’s game in Minnesota after aggravating a knee injury the week prior in Jacksonville. If he can’t go, expect second-year tackle Nick Fairley to make his fourth-career start.

The team will release game designations for all three players on today’s injury report at 4 p.m. on Detroitlions.com.

Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch also missed practice, but that was likely due to rest, which has been his usual schedule during the practice week.

Houston, Johnson and Avril among seven missing practice

Posted by ttwentyman on November 14, 2012 – 1:06 pm

The Lions were without three-quarters of their starting secondary Wednesday at the portion of practice open to the media.

Safeties Louis Delmas (knee) and Amari Spievey (concussion) remain out, and cornerback Chris Houston joined them after hurting his ankle in last week’s loss to the Vikings.

The Lions host reigning MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Packers at Ford Field this Sunday.

Despite not practicing, Delmas looked to have a little more pep in his step. The Lions continue to list him as day-to-day with that left knee injury and it appears he’s getting closer to returning.

The Lions were also without receiver Calvin Johnson, defensive end Cliff Avril, defensive tackle Corey Williams and safety Erik Coleman.

Cornerback Drayton Florence continues to practice while waiting for activation from short-term injured reserve. The Lions don’t have to activate Florence until next week, but he’s expected to be activated later this week and play vs. the Packers. He’s been out since Week 2 when he broke his forearm at San Francisco.

Delmas will miss second consecutive game, Johnson questionable, Levy probable

Posted by ttwentyman on November 9, 2012 – 5:00 pm

Safety Louis Delmas will miss his second consecutive game because of a knee injury.

Delmas missed the team’s first four games of the season after undergoing knee surgery in August. He made his first start of the season Week 6 at Philadelphia and had an interception in the Lions’ victory. He played the next week in Chicago, then injured the same left knee he had surgery on the following week vs. Seattle on Oct. 28. He hasn’t practiced since and the Lions have ruled him out for Sunday’s game at Minnesota.

The team has also ruled out safety Amari Spievey, who has yet to be cleared for contact after suffering a concussion at Chicago. It’s the second concussion for Spievey in less than a year.

Receiver Calvin Johnson, who practiced Friday for the first time this week, albeit in limited fashion, is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.  Johnson had 129 receiving yards last week at Jacksonville after missing practice all last week and being questionable for that contest.

The Lions have also listed defensive end Cliff Avril (back), offensive tackle Corey Hilliard (knee), defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee) and receiver Titus Young (knee) as questionable. Williams and Hilliard didn’t practice Friday. Avril and Young were limited.

Linebacker DeAndre Levy (hamstring) is listed as probable. Levy has missed the last two game due to injury.

Safety Erik Coleman (toe), cornerback Chris Houston (illness), running back Mikel Leshoure (ankle) and linebacker Stephen Tulloch (knee) are also probable.

CB Chris Houston among five defensive starters missing practice

Posted by ttwentyman on November 8, 2012 – 1:06 pm

The Lions got one defensive starter back on the practice field Thursday, but added a new one to list of missing.

Cornerback Chris Houston did not participate in the portion of practice open to the media because of flu-like symptoms.

Houston joined fellow defensive starters Cliff Avril (back), Corey Williams (knee), Louis Delmas (knee) and Amari Spievey (concussion) on the list of non-participants in practice.

Receiver Calvin Johnson missed his second consecutive practice, but told Detroitlions.com that his injured left knee was feeling better this week than it was last week at this time.

Receiver Titus Young (knee) also missed his second straight practice.

As expected, starting defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch was back on the practice field after his customary Wednesday rest day.

Calvin Johnson and six others miss practice

Posted by ttwentyman on November 7, 2012 – 1:07 pm

The Lions were without a number of starters today at practice as they began on-field preparations for Sunday’s game at Minnesota.

Receiver Calvin Johnson missed the portion of practice open to the media, which is no real surprise considering he was limited last week in Jacksonville with a left knee injury. Johnson still had seven catches for 129 yards in the game, but wasn’t near 100 percent. He missed all three practices last week.

The Lions were also without receiver Titus Young. Young’s been battling a knee injury for most of the season, but hasn’t missed a game.

The Lions will release their first injury report of the week at 4 p.m. today.

Defensively, they were without five starters: Defensive ends Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch (rest day), defensive tackle Corey Williams and safeties Louis Delmas and Amari Spievey.

Johnson, Levy questionable; Delmas, Spievey out

Posted by ttwentyman on November 2, 2012 – 4:00 pm

Receiver Calvin Johnson missed his third straight day of practice Friday and is officially listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report for Sunday’s game at Jacksonville.

“He’s done it before,” Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said of Johnson not practicing during the week and still playing on Sunday. “He obviously knows our offense, and then his health is the most important thing.

“But yeah, any time your players aren’t out there it’s definitely a concern. An ideal situation is to go practice every day, but by the time you get to the middle of a NFL season, nothing’s ideal.”

Johnson has been dealing with a knee injury for the past three weeks, but this is the first time he’s missed an entire week of practice because of it.

“That’s the main thing, just being ready for Sunday,” Johnson said Thursday. “I have to be out there to help these guys out.”

The Lions have ruled out safeties Louis Delmas (knee) and Amari Spievey (concussion) for Sunday.

Delmas injured the same left knee he had surgery on in training camp in last week’s win over the Seahawks.

Spievey suffered his second concussion in less than a year at Chicago two weeks ago and missed the Seattle game.

Linebacker DeAndre Levy, who also missed the Seattle game and has been limited the last two days with a hamstring injury, is also questionable.

The teams listed seven starters as probable, including: defensive end Cliff Avril (back), linebacker Justin Durant (quad), cornerback Jacob Lacey (concussion), tight end Brandon Pettigrew (knee), linebacker Stephen Tulloch (knee), defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee) and receiver Titus Young (knee).
