Lions place Bill Bentley on IR; sign Don Carey

Posted by ttwentyman on November 1, 2012 – 11:53 am

Bill Bentley’s season is over.

The Lions placed their rookie cornerback on season-ending injured reserve Thursday. Bentley has missed the last two games after suffering a shoulder injury at Philadelphia Oct. 14.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said Bentley will undergo surgery next week.

“He was sort of fighting through that injury with his shoulder,” said Mayhew. “He felt like he could still play. He really wanted to play. But there was just concern on our part and his part about making it worse and about his ability to stay on the field if he did get into a game; and about how he would perform with a harness on and some of the limitations he has as far as his range of motion.

“We felt the best thing to do was to put him on injured/reserved and get him ready for next year.”

Bentley, a third-round pick in April’s draft, also missed the team’s Week 2 contest at San Francisco after suffering a concussion the week prior vs. the Rams. He played in four games this season with three starts and finished with 15 tackles.

The team signed veteran safety Don Carey to fill Bentley’s roster spot. Carey can play both safety and cornerback, but is more natural at safety. Carey was with the Lions last season and played in five games with 11 tackles. The Lions waived Carey in final cuts before the season. He’ll wear No. 32.

Carey was on the practice field for the Lions Thursday, along with running back Mikel Leshoure (personal), linebacker DeAndre Levy (hamstring) and defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee), who all missed practice on Wednesday.

Receiver Mike Thomas, who the team traded for on Tuesday, was also on the practice field. He’ll wear No. 19.

Calvin Johnson was not on the practice field, missing his second straight practice with knee injury.

Also missing practice were: defensive end Cliff Avril (back) and safeties Louis Delmas (knee) and Amari Spievey (concussion).

Levy, Bentley inactive today for Lions

Posted by ttwentyman on October 28, 2012 – 11:35 am

The Lions will be without three starters on defense as cornerback Jacob Lacey, safety Amari Spievey and linebacker DeAndre Levy are all inactive vs. the Seahawks today.

Lacey and Spievey have yet to be cleared from concussions while Levy has been dealing with a hamstring injury since Monday’s game at Chicago. All three players did not practice this week.

The Lions will also be without rookie cornerback Bill Bentley, who will miss his second consecutive game with a shoulder injury. Rookie Jonte Green will get his second start at right cornerback opposite Chris Houston.

Fifth-year linebacker Ashlee Palmer will get the start for Levy and Ricardo Silva will start for Spievey at safety.

Coming off knee surgery Sept. 25, defensive tackle Corey Williams made his return to the field at Chicago on Monday, but only played 19 snaps as Nick Fairley got the start. Williams returns to the starting lineup today.

Running back Kevin Smith is also active for the first time in two games. The last time he was active was Sept. 30 vs. the Vikings, but he did not play in that game. He hasn’t carried the football since Week 2 at San Francisco.

The other inactives for the Lions are: tackles Jason Fox and Corey Hilliard and quarterback Kellen Moore.

Lacey ruled out for Monday; Bentley doubtful

Posted by ttwentyman on October 20, 2012 – 3:00 pm

The Lions will be without cornerback Jacob Lacey for Monday’s game at Chicago.

Lacey did not return to practice this week after suffering a concussion last week in a victory at Philadelphia and has been ruled out on Saturday’s injury report. Lacey started at right cornerback against the Eagles.

Rookie Bill Bentley, who has also started at right cornerback this season, is listed as doubtful with a shoulder injury. Bentley left the Eagles game with the injury and only returned to practice Friday and Saturday in a limited fashion.

If Bentley can’t play, the Lions will turn to either Jonte Greeen or Alphonso Smith to fill the right cornerback spot opposite Chris Houston.

Defensive tackle Corey Williams is questionable after returning to the practice field for the first time this week since undergoing knee surgery at the end of September. Williams didn’t practice Saturday and was limited Thursday and Friday.

The team listed defensive end Cliff Avril (back), safety Louis Delmas (knee), defensive end Ronnell Lewis (eye), tight end Brandon Pettigrew (knee), linebacker Stephen Tulloch (knee) and receiver Titus Young (knee) as probable.

CB Bill Bentley returns to practice; Lacey still out

Posted by ttwentyman on October 19, 2012 – 11:51 am

Cornerback Bill Bentley returned to the portion of practice open to the media Friday, though he didn’t do much.

Bentley has been out since Sunday’s game in Philadelphia with a shoulder injury. He said Thursday in the locker room that he did not know his status for Monday’s game in Chicago and was just taking it “day-by-day” at this point.

Rookie Jonte Green and the newly resigned Alphonso Smith were handling most of the other cornerback duties opposite Chris Houston.

Safety Louis Delmas (knee, rest) and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch (rest) returned to practice after sitting out Thursday.

Injury report: Williams limited in his return to practice

Posted by ttwentyman on October 18, 2012 – 4:00 pm

Defensive tackle Corey Williams returned to practice Thursday for the first time since undergoing knee surgery Sept. 25 and was listed as limited on Thursday’s injury report.

“I haven’t been out there for a while and my main thing right now is to get my wind back and get into the swing of things,” Williams said after practice.

He could not say whether he’d be ready to play Monday night in Chicago, though he was hopeful he might.

Cornerbacks Bill Bentley (shoulder) and Jacob Lacey (concussion) did not practice Thursday according to the report, neither did as safety Louis Delmas (knee) or defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch (rest).

The Lions listed five other players besides Williams as limited, including: defensive ends Cliff Avril (back) and Ronnell Lewis (eye), tight end Brandon Pettigrew (knee), linebacker Stephen Tulloch (knee) and receiver Titus Young (knee).

DT Corey Williams returns to practice

Posted by ttwentyman on October 18, 2012 – 11:53 am

The Lions got an important part of their defensive line back at practice today with the return of defensive tackle Corey Williams.

Williams has missed the last two games since undergoing knee surgery Sept. 25. In the locker room after practice Wednesday, Williams said he was feeling better and was taking it “day-to-day.”

The Lions will release the first injury report of the week today 4 p.m. on Detroitlions.com.

Cornerbacks Bill Bentley (shoulder) and Jacob Lacey (concussion) were not at practice. Both players left Sunday’s win in Philadelphia and did not return.

Safety Louis Delmas didn’t participate in the portion of practice open to the media. Delmas started his first game of the season in Philadelphia and played well with seven tackles, two tackles for loss and an interception. He practiced Wednesday, so Thursday might have just been a day of rest.

Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch was given his weekly day of rest and did not practice.

Receiver Nate Burleson and linebacker DeAndre Levy returned to practice after not practicing on Wednesday.

No Bentley or Lacey at practice; Greenwood practices for first time

Posted by ttwentyman on October 17, 2012 – 3:11 pm

The Lions were afforded an extra day of practice today by means of their upcoming Monday night game against the Bears.

Cornerbacks Bill Bentley (shoulder) and Jacob Lacey (concussion) did not participate in the portion of practice open to the media, though. Both were injured in Sunday’s victory in Philadelphia and did not finish the game.

Also sitting out practice Wednesday were: defensive end Cliff Avril, defensive tackle Corey Williams, linebacker DeAndre Levy and receiver Nate Burleson. Avril, Levy and Burleson all finished the game Sunday.

The Lions will not have an injury report today because they play on Monday night, which means we’ll have to wait another day to get word on the extent of some of these injuries.

As expected, rookie cornerback Chris Greenwood was back on the practice field after missing the first six weeks while on the PUP list for an abdominal tear.

Calvin Johnson limited on injury report; Bentley full participant

Posted by ttwentyman on September 20, 2012 – 4:02 pm

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson was back on the practice field Thursday, after sitting out Wednesday with a sore ankle, but did so in limited fashion, according to Thursday’s injury report. Johnson was listed as “limited” on Thursday’s report with an ankle injury.

He didn’t seem too worried about it, though, when talking with the media after practice.

“Foot’s good,” he said. “It felt good today to get out there, stretch it out a little bit, full practice.”

Johnson is expected to play and start Sunday in Tennessee.

Cornerback Bill Bentley participated in practice for a second time this week, and was upgraded from limited on Wednesday to a full participant Thursday. All that means is Bentley was cleared for contact after missing last week’s 49ers game with a concussion.

Bentley and cornerback Chris Houston, who was also a full participant in practice Thursday, seem to be in line to start Sunday in Tennessee.

Tight end Tony Scheffler missed practice again Thursday with a calf injury. He also missed Wednesday and his status for Sunday is still in question.

The official game designations for Sunday are released Friday at 4 p.m.

Defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee), safety Louis Delmas (knee) and linebacker Travis Lewis (quad) were all listed as out on Thursday’s injury report.

Calvin Johnson back at practice; Scheffler still out

Posted by ttwentyman on September 20, 2012 – 12:02 pm

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson was back on the practice field today, after sitting out Wednesday with a sore ankle. Johnson missed last Wednesday’s practice with a foot injury, but wasn’t limited against the 49ers and should play Sunday against the Titans.

Cornerback Bill Bentley participated in practice for a second time this week, after returning Wednesday from a concussion. Bentley and cornerback Chris Houston seem in line to start Sunday in Tennessee.

Tight end Tony Scheffler missed practice again today with a calf injury. He also missed Wednesday and his status for Sunday is still in question.

The official game designations for Sunday are released Friday at 4 p.m.

If Scheffler can’t play Sunday, rookie receiver Ryan Broyles could play a role in Sunday’s game plan.

Defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee), safety Louis Delmas (knee) and linebacker Travis Lewis (quad) also sat out today.

Leshoure, Houston and Bentley practice; Delmas still out

Posted by ttwentyman on September 19, 2012 – 12:01 pm

Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was the last player to trot out of the locker room and onto the field Wednesday morning for practice, which is curious, because no one would have blamed him if he’d camped out at the 50-yard line last night.

Leshoure was back on the practice field after serving a two-game suspension for marijuana possession this offseason. He still has to surrender two more game checks as part of his league-mandated penalty, but Leshoure should be strapping it up Sunday in Tennessee for his first regular season game since the Lions drafted him in the second round in 2010. He missed all of his rookie season last year after tearing his Achilles in training camp.

He split hand-offs with Kevin Smith and the first-team offense in the portion of practice open to the media.

The Lions are hoping Leshoure can give the run game a boost Sunday against the Titans.

Also back at practice for the Lions was cornerback Bill Bentley, who missed last Sunday’s game vs. the 49ers with a concussion.

Cornerback Chris Houston was at practice Wednesday, too, and looked to be doing more in the early portion of practice than he had last week when he was limited all three days of practice. Houston hasn’t played since spraining an ankle in Week 3 of the preseason.

Not participating in practice were: receiver Calvin Johnson, safety Louis Delmas, tight end Tony Scheffler, linebacker Travis Lewis, cornerback Drayton Florence and defensive tackle Corey Williams.

Johnson didn’t practice last Wednesday with a foot injury, either, but played against the 49ers and had eight catches for 94 yards.

The Lions will release the first injury report of the week at 4 p.m. today on Detroitlions.com.
