Lions without Louis Delmas and Corey Williams tonight

Posted by ttwentyman on December 9, 2012 – 8:01 pm

The Lions will be without safety Louis Delmas and defensive tackle Corey Williams tonight against quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense.

Delmas did not practice Wednesday or Friday because of a sore left knee and was limited when he did practice Thursday. He’s struggled with the injury all season, but had managed to play the last two weeks in monitored snaps.

Don Carey, who had two of the Lions’ three interceptions last week against the Colts, will start at safety in Delmas’ place. Ricardo Silva will start at the other safety spot.

Safety Tyrell Johnson, whom the team signed earlier this week, will be active with Delmas out.

Williams has also been battling a knee injury for most of the season. He had surgery in late September and has missed five games. He didn’t practice all week.

Nick Fairley will make his seventh start of the season and his fifth-straight in place of Williams.

Joining Delmas and Williams among the list of inactives for the Lions are: tackles Jason Fox and Corey Hilliard, quarterback Kellen Moore, receiver Lance Long and defensive end Ronnell Lewis.

Receiver Kris Durham will get the start opposite Calvin Johnson.

Backus’ regular season streak ends; Delmas to start

Posted by ttwentyman on November 22, 2012 – 12:05 pm

Jeff Backus’ iron-man streak of 186 consecutive regular season starts is over.

The 12-year veteran is inactive today due to an injured hamstring suffered Sunday in a loss to the Packers. Rookie Riley Reiff will start at left tackle.

Backus’ inactive status ends one of the most impressive streaks in NFL history.

Consider this, Backus has started every game at left tackle since the Lions drafted him in 2001. His 186 starts is a franchise record and the third-longest active streak in the NFL.

Backus started 49 consecutive games at Michigan beginning his redshirt freshman season in 1997, which means today is the first time Backus hasn’t started a game his team has played dating back 236 games.

Third-year player Jason Fox is active for the first time this season as a backup tackle. Fox hasn’t played in a game since his rookie season in 2010.

The Lions did get some good news with safety Louis Delmas, though. Delmas will play for the first time since injuring his left knee in a win over Seattle nearly a month ago. The Lions are 2-1 in games Delmas has started this season.

They’ll also have the services of cornerback Drayton Florence, who’s been cleared for contact after suffering a concussion in the Packers game. Florence participated in Wednesday’s walkthrough and will start at right cornerback for the injured Jacob Lacey (foot), who will not play today.

With receiver Titus Young inactive because of disciplinary reasons, rookie Ryan Broyles will get his first career start.

Receiver Brian Robiskie will be active for the first time since the Seattle game to add depth to the receiving corps.

Second-year defensive tackle Nick Fairley is active and will play today. Fairley showed up on Wednesday’s injury report with an illness. He’ll start his third straight game for the injured Corey Williams, who will miss his third consecutive contest.

Joining Backus, Young, Lacey and Williams on the inactive list are: offensive tackle Corey Hilliard, quarterback Kellen Moore and  defensive end Ronnell Lewis.

Lions place Bill Bentley on IR; sign Don Carey

Posted by ttwentyman on November 1, 2012 – 11:53 am

Bill Bentley’s season is over.

The Lions placed their rookie cornerback on season-ending injured reserve Thursday. Bentley has missed the last two games after suffering a shoulder injury at Philadelphia Oct. 14.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said Bentley will undergo surgery next week.

“He was sort of fighting through that injury with his shoulder,” said Mayhew. “He felt like he could still play. He really wanted to play. But there was just concern on our part and his part about making it worse and about his ability to stay on the field if he did get into a game; and about how he would perform with a harness on and some of the limitations he has as far as his range of motion.

“We felt the best thing to do was to put him on injured/reserved and get him ready for next year.”

Bentley, a third-round pick in April’s draft, also missed the team’s Week 2 contest at San Francisco after suffering a concussion the week prior vs. the Rams. He played in four games this season with three starts and finished with 15 tackles.

The team signed veteran safety Don Carey to fill Bentley’s roster spot. Carey can play both safety and cornerback, but is more natural at safety. Carey was with the Lions last season and played in five games with 11 tackles. The Lions waived Carey in final cuts before the season. He’ll wear No. 32.

Carey was on the practice field for the Lions Thursday, along with running back Mikel Leshoure (personal), linebacker DeAndre Levy (hamstring) and defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee), who all missed practice on Wednesday.

Receiver Mike Thomas, who the team traded for on Tuesday, was also on the practice field. He’ll wear No. 19.

Calvin Johnson was not on the practice field, missing his second straight practice with knee injury.

Also missing practice were: defensive end Cliff Avril (back) and safeties Louis Delmas (knee) and Amari Spievey (concussion).

Avril, Vanden Bosch, Leshoure and others ruled out for Lions tonight

Posted by ttwentyman on August 10, 2012 – 2:03 pm

The Lions will be without the services of a few key players when they host the Browns to open the preseason tonight at Ford Field.

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has ruled out defensive end Cliff Avril, running back Jahvid Best (Active/PUP), receiver Ryan Broyles, safety Don Carey, safety Louis Delmas, cornerback Chris Greenwood (Active/PUP), running back Mikel Leshoure, defensive tackle Sammie Hill, offensive tackle Jonathan Scott, and defensive end DE Kyle Vanden Bosch for tonight’s game.

“I haven’t practiced with pads on yet so I don’t know if that would be a good idea,” Avril said Thursday’s about playing tonight. “If I’m not ready there’s no point of me going out there and competing.”

With both starting defensive ends out of the lineup, expect reserve defensive ends Lawrence Jackson and Willie Young to get a good amount of playing time tonight.

Lions receiver Titus Young will not play, either, because of the expected birth of his child.

DT Corey Williams still not at practice; others return

Posted by ttwentyman on December 22, 2011 – 1:10 pm

The Lions were still without defensive tackle Corey Williams (hip) in the team’s final practice of the week Thursday before Saturday’s home game against the Chargers.

Williams played through the hip injury against the Raiders last week and said Wednesday that it wouldn’t keep him from playing Saturday.

We’ll see.

Also missing practice was safety Louis Delmas (knee) and corner Don Carey (concussion).

The Lions did get defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch (neck), right tackle Gosder Cherilus (hamstring) and safety Chris Harris (concussion) back on the practice field. Each missed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Defensive tackle Nick Fairley and defensive end Willie Young worked off to the side instead of taking part in individual drills in the portion of practice open to the media.

Lions without four starters at practice Wednesday

Posted by ttwentyman on December 21, 2011 – 1:25 pm

The Lions were without four starters at practice Wednesday as they continued on-field preparations for Saturday’s Christmas Eve game against the Chargers at Ford Field.

Safety Louis Delmas, defensive tackle Corey Williams, right tackle Gosder Cherilus and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch did not participate in the portion of practice open to the media.

Vanden Bosch is typically given a day of rest on Wednesday.

The official injury report will be released at 4 p.m.

Also not practicing for the Lions Wednesday were: defensive tackle Nick Fairley, safety Chris Harris and corner Don Carey.

Fairley practiced Tuesday. He said two weeks ago, though, that rest could be part of his weekly regiment going forward as he continues to deal with a foot injury.

Both Harris and Carey did not practice Tuesday.

Long snapper Don Muhlbach was back practicing Wednesday after missing Tuesday.

Corner Aaron Berry (shoulder), corner Chris Houston (knee) and defensive end Lawrence Jackson (thigh bruise) continue to practice this week.

Still no Louis Delmas at Lions practice

Posted by ttwentyman on December 20, 2011 – 1:43 pm

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Monday that all of his 53 players would be “in the mix to play this week” when the Chargers come to Ford Field on Saturday.

That means none of the injuries the Lions are dealing with are long-term.

However, there were still a number of players missing from Tuesday’s first practice of the week.

Safety Louis Delmas, who had arthroscopic knee surgery on Saturday, did not practice.

Delmas didn’t travel to Oakland and hasn’t played since hurting the knee against the Packers on Thanksgiving.

Also not participating in the portion of practice open to the media were: defensive tackle Corey Williams, safety Chris Harris, corner Don Carey and long snapper Don Muhlbach.

Corner Aaron Berry practiced for the first time since separating his right shoulder against the Vikings Dec. 11 and to part in individual drills.

Berry still looks to be favoring that right shoulder some, though.

Corner Chris Houston, who started against Oakland Sunday but was replaced by Alphonso Smith, was participating in practice.

Defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch got his usual day of rest to begin the workweek.

Fellow defensive end Lawrence Jackson took part in his second practice since suffering a thigh bruise against the Bears back in November.

Running back Kevin Smith (high ankle sprain) practiced and looked fine.

There will be no official injury report released by the team today.
