After five seasons with the Detroit Lions, former first-round pick Gosder Cherilus has agreed to terms on a new free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts, according to team’s website.
Cherilus reportedly signed a five-year deal, though terms were not disclosed.
The Lions selected Cherilus with the 17th pick of the 2008 draft out of Boston College. He’s started 71 games, including all 16 in 2012.
He missed four games of the 2010 season with a knee injury that required microfracture surgery following the season. He reportedly required more surgery this offseason.
Cherilus’ departure means the Lions will have an entirely new right side of the offensive line in 2013; the team released starting right guard Stephen Peterman shortly after the season.
Riley Reiff, Jason Fox, Corey Hilliard, Bill Nagy and Rodney Austin are the current contenders under contract who will compete for the openings.

The Lions had a numbers of starter return to the practice field today and look relatively healthy heading into Sunday night’s prime time matchup with the Packers in Green Bay.
Cornerbacks Chris Houston (ankle) and Jacob Lacey (foot/Achilles) returned to practice after sitting out Wednesday.
Defensive end Lawrence Jackson (concussion), right tackle Gosder Cherilus (knees) and safety Louis Delmas (knee) were also back after missing Wednesday’s session. Delmas was limited participant in the portion of practice open to the media today, though.
Defensive tackles Corey Williams (knee) and Nick Fairley (quad) were the only players not on the practice field.
Fairley was a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice, but is expected to play Sunday.
Williams missed his second consecutive practice, but that could be more his routine for the remainder of the season. He only practiced once last week and still played Sunday vs. Indianapolis.

The Lions were still without defensive tackle Corey Williams (hip) in the team’s final practice of the week Thursday before Saturday’s home game against the Chargers.
Williams played through the hip injury against the Raiders last week and said Wednesday that it wouldn’t keep him from playing Saturday.
Also missing practice was safety Louis Delmas (knee) and corner Don Carey (concussion).
The Lions did get defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch (neck), right tackle Gosder Cherilus (hamstring) and safety Chris Harris (concussion) back on the practice field. Each missed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Defensive tackle Nick Fairley and defensive end Willie Young worked off to the side instead of taking part in individual drills in the portion of practice open to the media.
