The Lions were outdoors for practice today as they began on-field preparations for Sunday night’s game in Green Bay. The Lions have lost 21-straight games to the Packers in the state of Wisconsin dating back to 1991.
Five starters and another key reserve were not among their teammates at practice Wednesday.
Defensive tackle Corey Williams, cornerbacks Chris Houston and Jacob Lacey, safety Louis Delmas and right tackle Gosder Cherilus did not participate in the portion of practice open to the media. Reserve defensive end Lawrence Jackson also sat out.
All six of those players finished Sunday’s loss to the Colts, though.
New signees Tyrell Johnson and Lance Long were on the field.
Johnson, a safety, was signed Tuesday night when the team released safety Erik Coleman.
Long was signed Wednesday morning to add depth to the receiving corps. He spent the preseason with the Lions and caught eight passes for 97 yards and might have the greatest nickname in the league when he was dubbed “The Vanilla Gorilla” by teammates and coaches this preseason.

Lions have signed veteran receiver Lance Long to a one-year contract.
Long, 26, who grew up in Macomb and played his college football at Mississippi State, has spent most of his NFL career on various practice squads since signing the Cardinals as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2008.
Long played in seven games with the Chiefs in 2009 and had 20 catches for 178 yards.
He was most recently cut by the 49ers during their final cuts of training camp last season.
Long (5-11, 186) will join the Lions’ offseason training program immediately.
The Lions drafted Ryan Broyles in the second round to be their fourth receiver behind Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Titus Young.
Long will compete with practice squad players Terrence Toliver, Marcus Harris and Nate Hughes, as well as some of the undrafted rookie free agents, for the No. 5 spot.
