Tim Walton accepts St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator position, according to reports

Tim WaltonThe Detroit Lions will head into the 2013 season without one of their best young assistant coaches as Tim Walton has accepted the St. Louis Rams’ defensive coordinator position, according to reports.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Walton was in St. Louis on Monday to interview for the job with Rams head coach Jeff Fisher.

Walton has been with the Lions for four seasons as their defensive backs coach. The team added the title of “third-down package” to his job description in 2012, giving him a more involved role in game-planning.

This is the second time Walton, 41, has interviewed with the Rams. Last season he interviewed with Fisher for a assistant defensive coordinator-passing game position, but ended up staying with the Lions.

Walton beat out former Cleveland defensive coordinator Dick Jauron and current Minnesota special assistant to the head coach and linebackers coach Mike Singletary for the Rams’ coordinator position.

The Lions have made no official announcement of the move or how they might fill Walton’s spot on the coaching staff.

The Lions hired Marcus Robertson as an assistant secondary coach last season. Robertson spent the previous five seasons as assistant secondary coach (2007-08) and secondary coach (2009-11) with the Tennessee Titans.

It’s unclear if the Lions plan to promote Robertson to fill Walton’s shoes or if they will look to add to the staff from the outside.

Report: Tim Walton interviewing for Rams defensive coordinator position

Posted by ttwentyman on February 11, 2013 – 6:10 pm

Tim WaltonAccording to St. Louis Rams beat writer Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Detroit Lions secondary/third down package coach Tim Walton is interviewing with the Rams for their vacant defensive coordinator position.

Walton joined the Detroit Lions staff in 2009. Before coming to Detroit he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Memphis in 2008.

This is the the second time Walton has interviewed with Rams coach Jeff Fisher for a position on his staff. He interviewed last January to be the Rams’ assistant defensive coordinator/passing game, but chose instead to stay with the Lions.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz added the third down package responsibilities to Walton’s title last offseason and he’s considered an up-and-comer on Schwartz’s staff.

The Lions added Marcus Robertson as a defensive assistant in the secondary last year. He’s been working closely under Walton for the past year.

All assistant coaches are signed for Lions

Posted by ttwentyman on January 27, 2012 – 4:45 pm

The Lions have confirmed the signing of all of their assistant coaches for the 2012 season.

Defensive backs coach Tim Walton and receivers coach Shawn Jefferson were the last to sign on the dotted line.

Walton interviewed with the Rams for their assistant defensive coordinator position last week, but ultimately decided to rejoin the Lions.

The Lions announced the signing of coordinators Gunther Cunningham (defense), Scott Linehan (offense) and Danny Crossman (special teams) earlier this month.

“I think we have a good group of coaches mixed with experience and younger guys, some former players, some guys that never played, but I like that dynamic and I like the consistency,” Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said after the season. “We were consistent from a preparation standpoint, from a game plan standpoint, from week-to-week.”

The Lions coaching staff has remained one of the most consistent since Schwartz took over in 2009.
