Louis Delmas, Sammie Hill and Cliff Avril all questionable for Sunday

Posted by ttwentyman on October 12, 2012 – 4:00 pm

The Lions officially listed safety Louis Delmas as questionable for Sunday’s game in Philadelphia on Friday’s injury report. Delmas sat out of practice Friday after being a limited participant both Wednesday and Thursday, but head coach Jim Schwartz said that was by design.

“We had planned to ease him back at the end of the week,” he said. “He’s doing well. He’s not having any setbacks and I’d like to keep it that way.”

Delmas said he’s still not 100 percent, but is getting better every day.

“I can’t really determine whether I play or not, but, like I said, I take it day-by-day, believe in my trainers – they’re doing a great job of preparing me, mixing me in, so I can get back out there on the field,” he said Friday.

Defensive tackle Sammie Hill (toe) and defensive end Cliff Avril (back) are also questionable. Both players were limited all week in practice.

Tight end Brandon Pettigrew (knee), receiver Titus Young (knee), linebacker Travis Lewis (quad) and safety Amari Spievey (groin) are listed as probable.

Linebacker Stephen Tulloch is also listed as probable after showing up on the injury report on Friday for the first time this week with a knee injury. He had a procedure done this offseason to help alleviate some soreness associated with tendinitis.

Lions get Louis Delmas back on the practice field

Posted by ttwentyman on October 3, 2012 – 12:34 pm

The Lions got some very good news Wednesday as safety Louis Delmas returned to the practice field for the first time since July. Delmas didn’t seem limited at all in the portion of practice open to the media.

He underwent surgery on an his ailing knee Aug. 7 and his recovery has been a little slower than most anticipated. But that’s all in the past now, as the Lions have their heart and soul on defense back. It’s likely he’ll play next week in Philadelphia as long as his knee reacts well to practice.

Delmas missed the last five games of the regular season last year and their was a significant drop in the production of the secondary during that time. The Lions allowed 128 more passing yards per game and nearly six more points per game without Delmas.

The Lions also got rookie linebacker Travis Lewis back on the practice field. Lewis hasn’t played since Week 1 because of quad injury.

Safety Amari Spievey was also back at practice. He missed Sunday’s game against the Vikings with a groin injury.

Not participating in practice for the Lions Wednesday, their final practice before they break for the bye week, were: DE Cliff Avril, C Dominic Raiola, LB Stephen Tulloch, CB Bill Bentley, DT Corey Williams, G Rob Sims, TE Brandon Pettigrew and LB Justin Durant.

The Lions also signed cornerback Lionel Smith to their practice squad. Smith was cut by the Cowboys.

TE Tony Scheffler still absent from practice; DT Corey Williams returns

Posted by ttwentyman on September 21, 2012 – 12:04 pm

Tight end Tony Scheffler was absent from the portion of practice open to the media for a third straight day today with a calf injury.

The Lions will release the injury report at 4 p.m. on Detroitlions.com, with game designations for Sunday, but it’s become unlikely Scheffler considering he has missed every practice this week.

If he can’t go Sunday in Tennessee, rookie receiver Ryan Broyles could have a bigger role in the offense with some different packages.

Also missing from practice were: safety Louis Delmas (knee) and linebacker Travis Lewis (quad).

Defensive tackle Corey Williams, who missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a sore knee, was back on the practice field Friday.

CB Chris Houston inactive tonight; WR Ryan Broyles to play

Posted by ttwentyman on September 16, 2012 – 7:03 pm

As expected, cornerback Chris Houston will not play tonight for the Lions with that sprained ankle. Houston practiced in limited fashion this week but was listed as doubtful for tonight’s game with the 49ers on Friday’s injury report. He will miss his second game this season.

Jacob Lacey and Drayton Florence will start at the two cornerback spots for Houston and rookie Bill Bentley, who was already ruled out Friday with a concussion. Lacey at right corner and Florence at left.

Between them, Lacey and Florence have 124 career starts in the NFL.

Along with Houston and Bentley, safety Louis Delmas, linebacker Travis Lewis, offensive tackles Jason Fox and Corey Hilliard and quarterback Kellen Moore are inactive for tonight’s game.

Receiver Ryan Broyles is active and will play in his first NFL game after being inactive last week against the Rams. Broyles underwent ACL surgery nearly 10 months ago.

Defensive tackle Corey Williams, who missed practice all week with a knee injury, is in the lineup and will start.

Bentley still absent from Lions practice; Jackson returns

Posted by ttwentyman on September 14, 2012 – 1:55 pm

Rookie cornerback Bill Bentley missed practice again Friday after suffering a concussion last week against the Rams. He has yet to clear the concussion protocol to resume practice and it appears unlikely he will play Sunday in San Francisco.

If Bentley doesn’t play Sunday, Jacob Lacey would likely start in his place.

Also not participating in practice Friday were safety Louis Delmas (knee), defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee) and linebacker Travis Lewis (quad).

Cornerback Chris Houston practiced for a third straight day Friday after returning to practice this week from an ankle injury.

Defensive end Lawrence Jackson (calf) was a participant in the portion of practice open to the media for the first time this week.

The Lions will release its official injury report with game designations for Sunday at 4 p.m. today on Detroitlions.com

WR Calvin Johnson a full participant in practice; CB Chris Houston still limited

Posted by ttwentyman on September 13, 2012 – 4:00 pm

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson was back at the portion of practice open to the media Thursday morning after missing practice Wednesday and later showing up on the injury report with a foot injury. Johnson was listed on Thursday’s injury report as a full participant in practice.

“My foot’s good, you know. Just wanted to give it a day to rest yesterday so that I could get out here and stress it today,” Johnson said after practice Thursday. “You want to stress it on a day like today because it’s a big run day for us so you can see how it would respond in a game.”

Cornerback Chris Houston practiced for a second consecutive day, which is a good sign his injured ankle responded well to practicing Wednesday for the first time in nearly three weeks. However, Houston was still listed as a limited participant in practice for a second straight say.

Houston seems to be trending toward playing on in San Francisco on Sunday, but we’ll have to wait until the Friday’s game designations come out on the injury report. If he doesn’t start, the Lions are likely to go with Jacob Lacey and Drayton Florence at cornerback.

Safety Louis Delmas (knee), cornerback Bill Bentley (concussion), defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee), defensive end Lawrence Jackson (calf) and linebacker Travis Lewis (quad) were all listed as no practice on Thursday’s injury report.

Williams did not practice Thursday after being listed as limited on Wednesday’s report.

Bentley remains out after suffering a concussion against the Rams last week.

Calvin Johnson back at practice; Delmas, Bentley and others remain out

Posted by ttwentyman on September 13, 2012 – 12:13 pm

Lions receiver Calvin Johnson was back at the portion of practice open to the media Thursday morning after missing practice Wednesday and later showing up on the injury report with a foot injury.

Cornerback Chris Houston practiced for a second consecutive day, which is a good sign his injured ankle responded well to practicing Wednesday for the first time in nearly three weeks. Houston was listed as limited on Wednesday’s injury report. Today’s injury report will be released on Detroitlions.com at 4 p.m. and we’ll see then if his practice status changed any for Thursday.

Safety Louis Delmas remains out of practice. Delmas hasn’t been on the field since undergoing knee surgery Aug. 7. It seems unlikely Delmas would play Sunday night in San Francisco without at least practicing once this week, but head coach Jim Schwartz did say last week that a veteran player like Delmas wouldn’t need a lot of time to get back into the swing of things when designated as healthy enough to play.

Also missing practice Thursday were cornerback Bill Bentley (concussion), defensive tackle Corey Williams (knee), defensive end Lawrence Jackson (calf) and linebacker Travis Lewis (quad). All four of those players also  missed practice Wednesday.

The Lions have agreed to terms with seventh-round pick Travis Lewis on a four-year contract, according to league sources.

Lewis’ deal is worth $2.16 million.

Under the new rules of the collective bargaining agreement, all draft picks get four-year deals, with first-round picks receiving a fifth-year option.

Lewis (6-2, 227) was the 223rd-overall pick in the draft and is the first of the team’s eight draft picks to agree to terms on a rookie deal. He finished with 446 career tackles at Oklahoma.

Detroit’s rookie mini-camp begins Friday at the team’s Allen Park facility and all eight picks will be in attendance.
